The analysis shows that 2,6 thousand people in the US die every year as a result of accidents caused by the use of the phone. people and 330 thousand are injured. For a single phone user, the risk is low - according to statistics, 13 out of a million people who use the phone while driving die. For comparison, out of a million people who are not wearing seat belts, 49 die. However, on a national scale, the burden is enormous. The authors of the report estimate that the costs associated with these accidents, mainly medical expenses, amount to up to 43 billion US dollars per year. Until now, these costs were thought to be no more than $2 billion, which would be a relatively small amount when considering the profits generated by mobile telephony. Most states in the US allow you to use your cell phone while driving.

However, representatives of mobile operators criticize the report. "It's kind of a guess," says a spokesman for one of the cell networks, the Cellular and Internet Association.
