Error code P2447

Technical description and interpretation of error P2447

Error code P2447 is related to the emissions system. The secondary air injection pump directs air towards the exhaust gases to reduce emissions. It draws in outside air and forces it through two one-way check valves into each exhaust group.

Error code P2447

The error indicates that the pump of the secondary air injection system, which is installed on some cars, is stuck. The purpose of the system is to force atmospheric air into the exhaust system during a cold start.

This facilitates the combustion of unburned or partially burned hydrocarbon molecules in the exhaust gas stream. Occurs as a result of incomplete combustion during cold start, when the engine is running on a highly enriched air-fuel mixture.

Secondary air systems usually consist of a large capacity air pump in the form of a turbine and a relay to turn the pump motor on and off. Plus solenoid and check valve to control air flow. In addition, there are various pipes and ducts suitable for the application.

Under hard acceleration, the air pump is switched off to prevent backflow of exhaust gases. For a self test, the PCM will activate the secondary air injection system and fresh air will be directed to the exhaust system.

Oxygen sensors perceive this fresh air as a bad condition. After this, a short-term adjustment of the fuel supply must occur to compensate for the lean mixture.

The PCM expects this to happen within a few seconds during the self test. If you do not see a momentary increase in fuel trim, then the PCM interprets this as a malfunction in the secondary air injection system and stores code P2447 in memory.

Symptoms of a malfunction

The primary symptom of a P2447 code for the driver is the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp). It is also called Check Engine or simply "check is on".

They may also look like:

  1. The control lamp "Check engine" will light up on the control panel (the code will be stored in memory as a malfunction).
  2. On some European vehicles, the pollution warning light comes on.
  3. Air pump noise due to mechanical wear or foreign objects in the pump.
  4. The engine does not accelerate well.
  5. The engine can run too rich if too much air enters the exhaust manifold.
  6. Sometimes there may be no symptoms despite a stored DTC.

The severity of this code is not high, but the car is unlikely to pass the emissions test. Since when error P2447 appears, exhaust toxicity will increase.

Causes of the error

Code P2447 may mean that one or more of the following problems have occurred:

  • Faulty secondary air pump relay.
  • Pump check valves defective.
  • Problem with control solenoid.
  • Rupture or leak in hoses or air ducts.
  • Carbon deposits on hoses, channels and other components.
  • Moisture ingress into the pump and motor.
  • Break or interruption of the power supply to the pump motor due to poor connection or damaged wiring.
  • Secondary air pump fuse blown.
  • Sometimes a bad PCM is the cause.

How to troubleshoot or reset DTC P2447

Some suggested troubleshooting steps to fix error code P2447:

  1. Connect an OBD-II scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic socket and read all stored data and error codes.
  2. Correct any other errors before continuing to diagnose code P2447.
  3. Inspect the electrical cables and connectors related to the secondary air pump.
  4. Repair or replace any shorted, broken, damaged, or corroded components as needed.
  5. Check secondary air pump relay.
  6. Check secondary air pump resistance.

Diagnosis and problem solving

Code P2447 is set when there is no outside air to burn excess hydrocarbons in the exhaust system on cold start. This causes the voltage at the front oxygen sensor to not drop to the specified level.

The diagnostic procedure requires the engine to be cold; ideally, the car has stood for at least 10–12 hours. After that, you need to connect the diagnostic tool and start the engine.

The voltage at the front oxygen sensor should drop below 0,125 volts in about 5 to 10 seconds. A fault in the secondary air system will be confirmed if the voltage does not drop to this value.

If the voltage does not drop to 0,125V but you can hear the air pump running, check all hoses, lines, valves, and solenoids for leaks. Also be sure to check all hoses, lines and valves for obstructions such as carbon buildup or other blockages.

If the air pump does not turn on, check all relevant fuses, relays, wiring, and pump motor for continuity. Replace or repair defective components as necessary.

When all checks are complete but the P2447 code persists, the exhaust manifold or cylinder head may need to be removed. Access to system ports to clean up carbon deposits.

Which vehicles are more likely to have this problem?

The problem with code P2447 can occur on various machines, but there are always statistics on which brands this error occurs most often. Here is a list of some of them:

  • Lexus (Lexus lx570)
  • Toyota (Toyota Sequoia, Tundra)

With DTC P2447, other errors can sometimes be encountered. The most common are the following: P2444, P2445, P2446.
