Škoda Superb Combi L&K 2.0 TSI (206 kW) 4 × 4 DSG

Better late than never, but still not be included in the general basket of all Slovenes. Although there are so few of us, the understanding and perception of cars varies greatly. While some are aware of their capabilities and buying potential, others still blow their nose when someone mentions the Škoda brand to them. But mostly those who do not even know the car or have never tested it do it. The Škoda Superb is without a doubt a compelling candidate. Perhaps also because of the national note, since the Slovenian also works in a group of experts who are engaged in the design of new Škoda models.

But probably much more because of the successful whole. If the Superb once impressed with its spaciousness (and reasonable price), now it is completely different. This advantage still remains (and above average), but is no longer the most important. Many people notice the renaissance of design earlier. The exterior lines are different, elegant, thoughtful and create a cohesive whole that many other car brands would not defend. But the new Superb is not just a form. In fact, it's a whole that's so much better than its predecessor that it convinced even the jury members in the European Car of the Year award. In mid-December, they selected the Superb as one of the seven finalists that will compete for this year's European Car of the Year 2016. Perhaps that is why we once again wanted to see the quality of the new Škoda product.

We've already tested the sedan and station wagon, but both with a diesel engine. What about a gasoline engine? This is also a concern, and even the most powerful petrol version is powered by "only" a 280 liter engine. But with the TSI label, which means the turbo is helping him, and the fact that the engine offers a whopping 100 "horses" puts an even bigger smile on his face! In other words: the giant Škoda accelerates from standstill to 5,8 kilometers per hour in just 250 seconds, and the maximum speed is limited to XNUMX kilometers per hour. To facilitate the transfer of power to the ground, the most powerful version of the Superb is already equipped as standard with all-wheel drive, and gear changes are provided by an automatic transmission with a double clutch, i.e. a six-speed group. DSG. The pleasure is guaranteed, the power is enough for a dynamic, if not quite sporty ride. Of course, a sporty driving mode must be selected in advance, which provides faster gear changes and a stiffer chassis. However, the Superb is not designed for racing, so it may not perform well during fast corners, but it could become king on smooth highways. Also because of all the auxiliary safety systems that ensure not only a fast but also a safe ride.

Mainly due to its spaciousness, Superb can easily become a family car even with a gasoline engine. Among the driving modes already mentioned, Eco can also be selected. This primarily ensures more favorable consumption, and also the fact that every time the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal for a long time, the engine does not brake, but the gearbox provides idling or cruising. The transmission provides engine braking only when the driver starts to brake. This, of course, is evidenced by fuel consumption, which is not something miraculous for a car weighing more than one and a half tons. Thus, the test Superb consumed exactly eight liters per 100 kilometers on a standard lap, and the test consumption was about 11 liters. If normal consumption is more than unrealistic, test consumption may be much lower. But petrol 280 "horses" seduced every member of our editorial board. Acceleration without diesel flair is a reason for driving pleasure, which ensures that sometimes the distance is a little more than it could be. So below the line, it's easy to figure out why the new Superb ended up on the list of contenders for this year's European Car of the Year.

Not only is it convincing with its shape, roominess and fuel-efficient diesel engine, but it also offers a bit of forgotten petrol driving pleasure.
