When there is no electricity

When there is no electricity Low temperatures are detrimental to batteries. If the battery fails, we must obtain an energy donor to start the engine.

Winter is a hard time for our cars. Frosts cause not only freezing of windows, sticking of rubber door seals with When there is no electricitybodies, but also make it difficult to start engines. As the temperature drops, the efficiency of the battery in the car decreases, which in extreme situations can lead to zero voltage in the car's on-board network. At this moment, it is simply impossible to start the engine, what if the battery refused to cooperate? To put it simply: you need to borrow electricity or try to start the car by pushing it.

I borrow amplifiers

To start the car from an external power source, we need connecting cables. We select them according to the size of the motor as well as the battery and therefore the amperage at the moment of starting and the length of the cables. As a general rule, long cables over 2,5 m should be thick (at least 25 mm1,2). Thinner ones can burn out, although this largely depends on whether you run a 3-liter engine or a XNUMX-liter straight-six.

To be honest, starter cables should be a mandatory piece of equipment for older cars, the condition of which, like the condition of the entire electrical system, is in doubt. In new cars, we have at least five years of rest.

important size

Even when we have cables in the car, we still need a "donor" of electricity to be successful. The principle here is the same as for the selection of cables. In the event of emergency firing, we will try to ensure that the engines of the donor and recipient are of the same power.

Starting an eight-cylinder loader with a liter drive battery can drain the smaller engine's battery and immobilize both vehicles. When there is no friendly neighbor nearby, or there is no partner ready to help with the soul, you can use a taxi. The kindling of cables in winter is a popular order, the cost of which is about PLN 20.

plus to plus

When connecting an external battery, you should follow a few rules. First of all, we make such a connection with the “donor” engine turned off. An important point is the order of connecting the terminals. First, we connect the plus with the plus, then the minus of the “donor” battery with the “recipient” mass. Ideally, this should be a bolt on the engine or some kind of body element that conducts electricity well. We will try not to attach crocodile clips (the so-called clips of connecting cables) to painted parts of the body: paint blocks the passage of electricity, therefore, this procedure may not be effective. All consumers of electricity must be switched off in the car of the recipient of energy. Then we start the “donor” engine and after about a minute we try to start the “recipient” unit. This minute is needed so that the discharged battery is at least slightly charged. If, after the first attempt, the engine in a car with a dead battery does not start, take a half-minute break before using the starter again. If the device does not speak after several attempts, the problem is elsewhere. The cables are disconnected in the reverse order: first mass, then positive.

Cables are better than pushing

The car manufacturer decides whether to use connecting cables, so it is worth reading the owner's manual beforehand. There are car models with sensitive electronics that can fail when borrowing electricity. But in most cases this shouldn't be a problem.

The situation is different when it comes to starting on pride. It is strictly forbidden in the case of vehicles with automatic transmission. It is also not recommended when the engine camshaft is driven through a toothed belt: if you try to force it out, the camshaft torque may go astray, which will lead to engine malfunction. But starting the engine while pushing or towing the vehicle may not be possible due to slippery surfaces and low rolling resistance.
