Panasonic has introduced 4680 cells. She also dropped the last zero in the nomenclature.

When Tesla launched cars powered by 2170 cells, there were voices of protest that Musk, as usual, was violating the established order, because these cells should be called 21700. Now Panasonic showed 4680 cells for the first time in history and ... broke the established tradition.

At the presentation in Tokyo (Japan), old and new elements of the Japanese manufacturer were shown. Their photo was taken by a Wall Street Journal journalist. It features link 1865 (formerly: 18650) used in Tesla Model S and X, link 2170 used by Tesla Model 3 and Y, and new link 4680 (diameter 46mm, height 80mm).

New 4680 cells will be used in the Tesla Model Y with a structured battery, in the Cybertruck, in the Tesla Semi truck tractor... It is unknown if they will go to older models as well, but the announcement of the Model S Plaid + (removed from the offer) suggests Musk may want to use them in all cars in the future. Already during Battery Day 2020, he showed that they are the optimal solution in terms of savings (lower production costs) and the range of electric vehicles, even if they come with certain problems:

Panasonic has officially introduced new batteries for the first time. The head of the battery company Kazuo Tadanobu said in an interview with the WSJ that he saw the light in the tunnel and was preparing to commercialize them, that is, go beyond prototypes. The production line is slated to launch in March 2022, and Tadanobu has not provided any additional deadlines for their deliveries to Tesla.

During the announcement of its third quarter 2021 financial results, Tesla announced that "In 4680, 2022 cells will appear in the production model"... The name of the model has not been disclosed, it will probably be a Tesla Model Y from a plant near Berlin (Germany) or Austin (Texas, USA).
