Smart ForTwo and ForFour concepts for FrankfurtThe third generation Smart Fortwo is a year behind schedule, which means it could be a while before we finally see the car. To keep the interest going, Smart will reportedly unveil a couple of design-showing concepts at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

One will be for the new Fortwo and the second one will be for a preview of the new Forfour. Forfour, as you might guess from the name, is a four-seater version of the Fortwo. It was launched alongside the first generation Fortwo but never spawned a successor. The latest concepts will be more reminiscent of the new Smarts than the previous Forstars concept shown in 2012.

At the heart of them and the possible production models they will create will be a new platform developed jointly by Smart and alliance partner Renault (the French automaker will use it for its next-generation Twingo). The new platform will be flexible enough to create a variety of models, including a high-riding crossover, according to Autocar.

This larger Smart will be aimed at the MINI Countryman, although it is expected to come exclusively in rear-engine, rear-wheel drive. This configuration is said to be the hallmark of the Smart brand and will not change, at least in the next generation. Spy shots of both the new Fortwo and the new Forfour have surfaced, though they only show early-stage test mules. The debut is likely to take place next year.
