Brief test: Opel Cascada 1.6 Turbo Cosmo

However, with the release of the latest generation Opel Convertible, this and much more has changed. But let's be precise - the latest Astra convertible wasn't just a convertible, it was called the TwinTop because of the hard folding roof. And anyway, it was Astra. Opel's new convertible, which isn't even that new now, was indeed built on the same platform as the Astra, but that doesn't mean it's an Astra convertible. In the case of the Cascada, this does not even mean that the cars belong to the same class, since the Cascada is significantly larger than the Astra, by as much as 23 centimeters.

Thus, we can say with confidence that the new Opel convertible has every right to its (separate) name. But this is not just an increase in centimeters. The size helps him, but the fact is that this is a big machine, which also gives a lot. However, speaking of large, one must also take into account its weight, which significantly exceeds the size of a sedan of the same size with a classic hardtop at the expense of a convertible. Well, this is not a problem, but only until the correct engine is selected. Some time ago, Opel (and not only they, but almost all car brands) decided to reduce the volume of engines (the so-called reduction in size).

Of course, a smaller engine is also lighter, so you can install smaller brakes on the car, save on some components and so on. The end result is, of course, a considerable saving in the total weight of the car, which, after all, the engine is even quite decent in terms of volume. Complications, of course, with the convertible. This is significantly heavier than a normal car due to the body reinforcements, and due to the extra weight, the engine has so much more work to do. And in this part, the engines are a different piece. The more power there is, the easier it is for them. And this time, otherwise only a 1,6-liter engine with the Cascado had no problems.

Mainly not because it is available in two versions (we introduced the 170-'horsepower 'about half a year ago), but the more powerful version of the 1,6-liter turbo petrol engine boasts 200' horsepower ', which would be enough if we joke a bit, even for the truck. Well, for Cascado it certainly is. With it, this convertible also gets a sporty note. Due to the long wheelbase and thoughtfully distributed weight of the car, there are no problems even when driving faster on a winding road. The Cascada shows its origins on a poor basis - the convertible body curvature cannot be completely eliminated. However, shaking is quite acceptable and it is perhaps even less than in a larger and, above all, significantly more expensive convertible.

Let's go back to the engine. Moreover, his 200 "horses" have no problems with the weight of the Cascade. However, the picture changes with gas mileage. The test average was in excess of ten liters, so the standard consumption was a decent 7,1 liters per 100 kilometers. If we compare both versions of the engine, then the average gasoline consumption is almost the same, but there is a significant difference from the standard one, namely, the more powerful version has it less by a liter. Why? The answer is simple: a bulky car can handle 200 horsepower much better than 170 horses. However, since this is a new generation engine, of course, there is no need to increase the consumption accordingly for sporty driving. Therefore, you can also write about the Cascado and its 1,6-liter engine that more is less!

We were also impressed by the interior of the Cascada. Well, some already have an exterior shape and color that goes well with a burgundy red canvas roof. This is definitely one of the most important parts of the car, so it is worth noting that it can also be moved while driving at speeds up to 50 kilometers per hour. The procedure takes 17 seconds, so you can easily open or close the roof when you stop at traffic lights.

Inside, they impress with leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, navigation, a rearview camera, and many other goodies that cost money too. The accessories have raised the Cascado's price by more than seven thousand euros, and most of all, almost three thousand euros, will have to be deducted for the leather upholstery. Without it, the price would have been much more decent. However, it is possible to write for Cascado that it is well worth the price. If you started looking for competitors with a counter in your hand, they would cost you several tens of thousands of euros more. Hence, leather upholstery shouldn't be a problem either.

evaluation

  • With Cascado, Opel has no illusions about sales results. But this does not mean that something is missing in the car. He simply rides in a class of cars that is highly dependent on weather conditions and geographic location. But don't worry - even the closed-top Cascada is more than worthy of a car!
