Short test: Renault Fluence 1.6 dci 130 Dynamique

The timing belt maintenance cost is significant and, especially in today's economic climate, it means pain for every major service, and with this engine, which is a joint product of Renault and Nissan engineers, that cost has now been eliminated. Commendable!

While the Fluence is a global car, of course we have limousine buyers. Since each of them matters today, Renault decided to offer this latest sedan for the home as well.

Walking through the car shows that they adhered to the golden laws of limousine design when designing. The car has pleasant movements, although they were not looking for a revolution. Sometimes it is also better than experimenting, especially if you are betting on a wider range of potential buyers. We like the front end, which fits well with the current design guidelines outlined in the latest generation Clio and which can now be seen on the Captur as well. The test Fluence was also richly equipped, which was also noticeable from the outside, as the image was beautifully completed with LED daytime running lights and modern alloy wheels.

The interior also seems like a fresh approach to design and is actually a modern car and not just an attempt to cheaply adapt something from another car segment inside the house. Upon entering, we were a little disturbed by the bizarre operation of the card, which otherwise opens the door through the sensor as soon as we get to the door.

He does not hide his kinship with Megan inside. The sensors are transparent, and accessing most of the information that Fluence can display on LCDs is fairly straightforward. Our only concern was that we spent a little time looking at the offer on the big center screen. This touchscreen, which is fine, and measures seven inches (which is not bad either), just looking through the information or the options offered is a little tricky and takes a while before it becomes a chore. With Dynamique equipment, you can get, for an additional cost, a full-fledged multifunctional tool that will play your favorite radio station or music, provide a Bluetooth connection, TomTom navigation and, of course, a telephone connection. When we get behind the wheel, we feel the pleasant sensation of an elegant car, and we only wish we had a slightly better sound system.

Inside, the car is pleasing to the passenger and driver, and last but not least, it also offers useful storage space for small items or, say, coffee that you buy at a gas station.

Slightly less space for passengers. For older passengers, especially if they are a little taller, the back seat will be quite cramped. There is not enough room for either knees or head.

While we complained about the spaciousness behind the front seats, we almost only complimented the engine. 1,6-liter turbodiesel with 130 "horsepower" is powerful, the car rides well on the road, but consumes little. In the test, we drove easily with a consumption of just over six liters per 100 kilometers. If we're picky already, we only need a little more torque at the lowest revs, as the turbo bore is quite noticeable, which then results in a slightly livelier launch even when we don't want to. We have no comments on power and torque in the upper mid and upper rev ranges.

The cheapest Fluence will set you back more than RUR 14 in replacement, with this engine and equipment as rich as this one (Dynamique), at 21.010 XNUMX euros, which is not so cheap anymore.

evaluation

  • The star of this car is the new 1.6 DCI engine with 130 horsepower. It is powerful and low in consumption, but mainly due to the chain, it saves on regular maintenance, even when the car has to travel many kilometers. A good impression due to the elegant image and high level of interior equipment is somewhat spoiled by the cheap boot lid guides and, unfortunately, the slightly overpriced test car.

We praise and reproach
