Short test: Volkswagen Transporter Kombi 2.0 TDI (103 kW) KMR

Driving in passenger cars that can accommodate nine people (including the driver) is something out of the ordinary. The inhabitants of Dars thought so too, and since this year those who drive such cars have the “privilege” to pay for the more expensive Slovenian motorway vignette. Is it right for the owners of such machines to hit the wallet harder, at another time and in another place. But even this measure is a kind of proof that these box semi-trailers are different from cars. This, of course, is known to everyone who has to transport more people or cargo.

The Transporter (and two other Volkswagen vehicles, named differently simply because of more equipment and more valuable materials, such as the Caravelle and Multivan) holds a special place among semi-trailers. We attribute this to him from our own experience, and the prices of used cars show this as well.

The test version with a two-liter turbodiesel for 103 kilowatts is the second for the editors of the Auto magazine. For the first time in 2010, we tested a slightly richer version, which also cost more (as much as 40 thousand euros). This time, the tested model has a "special" price, which, of course, no car dealer in Slovenia can refuse anymore.

At a lower price, the buyer simply gets a little less, in our case, for example, so that there are no sliding doors on the left side. But we don't need them at all with such a seating arrangement as in this Transporter Kombi. It is mainly designed to carry passengers. In addition to two benches with three seats each, there is also a fixed bench next to the driver's seat, on which two can be kneaded.

You will hear less praise for spaciousness if all the seats are occupied, but comfort is satisfactory considering that such a layout is a compromise between the maximum number of passengers allowed and the roominess of this van. However, this version seems to be more for the transport of goods. This is also evidenced by the possibility of removing the seats from the passenger compartment and using the huge space for the transport of goods. If you are going to remove and reinstall bench seats, I only recommend that you complete two tasks because the seats are quite heavy and the task is difficult.

Transporter Kombi shows good performance. If you look only at the numbers, maybe 140 "horses" will not be enough for such a machine. But this is the third power level of the Volkswagen engine. The engine turns out well, and even more surprising is the modest fuel consumption. This is true of the results of our test round, during which we went to factories with a statement of normal vehicle consumption, which is quite unusual. Consumption was also quite moderate during our test, of course it is expected that if we load it with a load capacity (more than one ton) it will increase.

The Transporter also deserves credit for its driving comfort on paved roads and, to a lesser extent, for its sound comfort, because Volkswagen has allocated very few suitable substances for the rear of the cab to drown out sounds coming from under the cab. chassis.
