And if it does, because in some cases it is already happening, sports brands or their customers will benefit the most. It is true that rationalization and above all common sense are good excuses for buying a car with a diesel engine, but on the other hand, gasoline engines are among the cars designed to thrill the heart and soul.

So loud and strong.

Test Alpha may already be like this. Well, after trying out the 500hp version of the QV, every machine seems underpowered, but even a 280hp feat is no small feat. Interestingly, the Stelvio was a bit shy at the wheel during the test. Acceleration is very moderate and the sensation of speed is well hidden. But when you look at the numbers, whether on the meter or on the specs, it quickly becomes clear that the car is very fast. It accelerates from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in just 5,7 seconds, and a top speed of about 230 kilometers per hour. Especially considering we're writing about a car that weighs over 1.700 pounds. At the same time, it should be said that Stelvio is one of the lightest in its class, despite the aforementioned weight.

That's why we can't complain about his position. Body swaying while cornering is a bit of a struggle, on the highway, at high speeds, nothing at all, and so the Stelvio is a good approximation to driving a car. Of course, the laws of physics cannot (yet) be bypassed, and such an exaggeration in a turn causes the nose to deviate from the direction of travel, but we can still praise the driving of the most powerful Stelvio at the moment. However, or especially when the trip is fast and dynamic. During a relaxed and passenger-friendly ride, the Stelvio doesn't seem refined enough. Even now, fine cars are in demand by other brands, but Alfa Romeo can also soothe the soul and heart.

Well equipped

This, of course, helps if the car is well equipped. With a final price tag of 53.000 euros, the Stelvio is certainly not a cheap car, but it does offer a lot when compared to its competitors. However, pickpockets lack the Apple CarPlay that the Stelvio QV already has, and hence the rest of the versions will also have; but the central information screen is still the cancer of Stelvia's wound and, of course, that of his predecessor, Giglia. The control of the thumbturn is sometimes (too) demanding, the offer is too modest, but we have already complained about this with the diesel version, so we will not drown this soup. As for the rest of the equipment, the First Edition takes good care of the driver's well-being, and passengers cannot complain either.

So let it be true this time too: Stelvio is not (yet) on par with its premium competitors, but it is far ahead of them. However, it’s an Alfa Romeo first, and then an SUV, and that certainly makes a difference. So for the average connoisseur, and for the fan of this Italian brand in general. Be that as it may, Stelvio is nevertheless a good spice.

evaluation

  • We are probably not far from the truth if we write that Stelvio is not for everyone. In fact, the Alfa Romeo brand is not for everyone. You should definitely be a little (or quite) in love with him, only then are you completely satisfied. As a result, you are willing to forgive, or at least make some kind of compromise, and then the end result will be correct. Probably a lot of this is also required by the Stelvio with a two-liter turbo engine. If we look at consumption, it could have been less, but on the other hand, the heart beats anxiously when you step on the gas. Again we are in a compromise ...
