It usually just means that designers have added plastic trim to the car, perhaps a piece of plastic (metal of course) under the bumper to resemble metal engine or chassis protection, maybe some trim, and the story slowly ends there. Well, some people add the chassis a little higher so that the belly of the car (for example, driving on a caterpillar for love) is slightly off the ground. On the back there is a badge that says Cross (or whatever commercial name they use for such cars) and that's it.

At Citroën, this recipe was partially followed when the C5 Tourer (i.e. the station wagon) was converted into the C5 CrossTourer. But the C5 basically has an advantage, if the level of equipment is high enough (and Exclusive for Citroën means the highest): the hydraulic suspension.

Since it can only be adjusted using computer settings (which for the driver means the three buttons next to the gear lever), Citroën engineers were able to play around a bit. Thus, the C5 CrossTourer is 70 centimeters higher than the regular C1,5 Tourer at speeds up to 5 kilometers per hour. Few but noticeable to the eye, and as is common with this type of car, along with fender liners, plastic "protectors" under the front and rear bumpers and some other optical body changes, enough to make the CrossTourer look much better. more attractive than Tourer. the aerodynamic penalty is not great. It descends at a speed of over 70 kilometers per hour and thus equates to a classic caravan.

The advantage of the hydraulic suspension is particularly evident when it is necessary to drive on poorly controlled terrain. No, this is not off-road (the CrossTourer simply does not have all-wheel drive, but its safety electronics are able to adapt well to the ground under the wheels), especially when you need to climb over a large bump, for example when parking. If classic car drivers are (justifiably) intimidated and looking for a different location (for example, on a trolley track where you can't see the grass hiding between the wheels), you can raise the CrossTourer four centimeters (this setting 'holds up to 40 kilometers per hour) or two more (up to 10 km / h) and drive or maneuver without any problems. And yet: if heavier or larger items need to be loaded into the 505-liter trunk (which is long and wide, but a little shallow), you can lower or raise the rear with the push of a button. Comfortable.

The rest of the CrossTourer is the same as the classic C5 (except for a few design additions). That means a comfortable but slightly elevated driving seat (for taller drivers, you may need a slightly longer longitudinal seat shift), a fixed-center steering wheel (which is mostly completely natural), and a roomy feel overall. The fact that the C5 is no longer the youngest is indicated by the placement of some buttons (and their shape) and some minor inconsistencies (for example, you can play music from your mobile phone, select songs using the buttons on the steering wheel, but you can't stop or start playback, for example).

However, it compensates for this not only with ample rear space, but also with rich equipment. The Exclusive badge on the CrossTourer means not only hydraulic suspension, but also Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, parking assistance, cruise control and speed limiter, rain sensor, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch wheels, electric tailgate opener and many more. equipment. The test CrossTourer had just under five thousand surcharges, and those euros went to directional xenon headlights (recommended), better audio system, navigation (with rear camera), special white color (yes, it's really beautiful) and seat leather. You could easily survive without the last four extras, right?

The engine - a 160-horsepower diesel paired with a classic six-speed automatic - isn't one of the most fuel-efficient or the most power-hungry, but it's powerful when you need it and quiet and unobtrusive when you don't need full throttle. The automatic transmission upshifts too late, especially when driving very slowly, which can be seen from the fuel consumption: on our standard lap it was in the D position for about six liters, while driving the same, except that the gears were selected manually (and shifted earlier) two deciliters less. The overall test consumption was also not the lowest: about eight liters, but given that such a CrossTourer has almost 1,7 tons of empty weight and wide 18-inch tires, this is not surprising.

For the CrossTourer test, you'll deduct 39k, or about 35k if you think about it without surcharges, except for the xenon headlights, which are competitively priced. However, if you catch it on one of their campaigns (or you're a good negotiator), it might even be cheaper - anyway, the C5 CrossTourer is proof that with a few changes from another, not the latest model, you can do version that will successfully attract customers.
