Brief test: Citroën DS4 HDi 160 Sport Chic

What is the difference between DS4 and C4?

The DS4 would like to be outwardly different from the C4, but it doesn't quite succeed. The look is just too similar. I would like to be more sporty, but then why is the chassis so high and the gap between the tires and fenders so large? If not sporty, then comfortable? Not with such a rigid chassis and steering wheel. What then? The answer is not simple, and more than not, DS4 sales will depend on how many customers are actually looking for a vehicle that stands out, whether sporty, comfortable, or otherwise. Such one may be disappointed. But given the overseas sales of the DS4, there are still plenty of those who like the DS4 as it is.

So what does it look like? As mentioned, it is not very far from the C4 format. At first they catch your eye discs, 18-inch, truly original and nice shape, partially black, shod with low-profile tires. If there were wide, convex wings directly above them, the picture would be perfect.

However, this is not the case, because the DS4 looks like a half-cross due to the large gap between the tires and the wings, and the sporty appearance cannot be attributed to it. Inside, the picture is better - the forms are more “daring”, a few unusual little things (for example, the ability to change the color of the backlight of the counter) make it different.

Even the engine, the 4-liter turbodiesel, is not quite the same as the CXNUMX.

Well, mechanically, with slightly modified electronics settings, Citroën engineers have extracted 120 kilowatts or 163 "horses", which is 13 more than the most powerful diesel C4. It is not entirely clear why the force required to depress the clutch pedal should have increased dramatically with increasing power, but the point is that switch too hard.

It's the same with the steering wheel - since the DS4 isn't an athlete, there's no need for stiffness. And the chassis too – the combination of 18-inch wheels and distinctly low-profile tires can shock passengers on bad roads.

Equipment?

Rich as it should be DS. Front and rear parking sensors can measure a parking space and signal to the driver if it is large enough, leather on the seats is standard, as well as a blind spot monitoring system, of course, also automatic dual-zone air conditioning, automatic lights and wipers, automatic dimming of the interior rearview mirror kind ...

You get a lot for $ 26k, and the list of powerful extras is small: bi-xenon directional headlights, some optics, navigation, audio amplifier, electricity for the seats, and a few additional leather upholstery options. Everything else is serial. You still don't want it?

evaluation

  • If the DS4 were more different from the C4, its sales base would be better. However, do not ignore: a lot of equipment, nice design, good price.

We praise and reproach

too rigid chassis

steering wheel too hard

clutch pedal too stiff
