Short test: Fiat 500L Trekking 1.6 Multijet 16v

If you think that winter joys are just skiing, sledding or ice skating, you are wrong. The sworn motorists, of course, indulge in the joys of winter right behind the wheel. But for this, the basic conditions must be provided, related to the correct technique and a remote, but transparent road.

Now I would like to continue that we started the weekend in the hills with a Lancer EVO or Impreza STi, but I have had no luck in life. As the father of two up-and-coming boys, he should probably spend the joys of winter with something that doesn't have a half-asleep pedigree and offers more options for transporting family and luggage. Fiat 500L? Why not.

Of course with the Trekking label. Thus, the eye of passers-by will be attracted not only by the colorful decorations (bright yellow with a white roof!), but also by the higher position and plastic curbs. The Fiat 500L is a centimeter taller than the classic version and has all-season tires with a rougher profile. The plastic edging makes it more "masculine", but I'm afraid that confident driving on a snowy gravel road will soon end in tears, because, despite the distance of 14,5 centimeters between the bottom and the road, the snow is likely to break plastic accessories. at least at the front. Unfortunately, the 500L Trekking doesn't have all-wheel drive either, but only the Traction+ feature, which allows for more slippage on the front drive wheels, as well as simulating a classic diff lock at speeds up to 30km/h by braking the slip wheel. It's good enough for a puddle of mud or climbing a lightly snowy hill, but by no means for real terrain or adventures into the unknown after it's been snowing all night. Tires are, of course, a compromise, so you need to be a little more careful both on the ground and on the pavement.

As we have already written many times, the Fiat 500L has a lot of advantages, such as a huge trunk with a double bottom, a low cargo edge, a longitudinally movable rear bench, not to mention a 1,6-liter turbodiesel engine with modest fuel consumption. but what worried us the most was the shape of the steering wheel, seats and gear lever. The driver pays for his unusual appearance with an uncomfortable steering wheel, a huge gear lever and a high position behind the wheel when the position in the seat is not the most comfortable. True, you soon get used to it.

You also get used to the equipment very quickly, in our case it is central locking, four electrically adjustable windows, cruise control, hands-free system, touchscreen, radio, two-way air conditioning, we could even feel the skin and look forward to the heated front seats. 17-inch wheels combined with higher headroom also means a stiffer chassis, otherwise the car will wobble too much and, as a result, upset the passengers in it. So from memory I would say that Trekking is a little tougher compared to the classic version.

I guarantee once again: for winter joys you need not only skis, skates, four-wheel drive or 300 "horses", although none of the above will protect you. The Fiat 500L Trekking is safe enough for the average user, but interesting in its own way.

evaluation

  • It does not have a 4x4 drive, but due to its economical engine, spaciousness and slightly raised chassis, it was still our first choice for the winter rally. Didn't we say it all?
