Short test: Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium

We already know a lot, if not all, about the big picture of Mondeo; The car has a distinct and convincing appearance (from the outside), is spacious and comfortable to use and rides very well, in addition, for all the equipment, which also includes its equipment (especially the Titanium), they require decent money. These are definitely reasons to think of the Mondeo as a personal or business vehicle. Or both at the same time. In any case, he will not disappoint. Except maybe a little.

Modern electronics allows a lot in the car, it is capable of issuing many warnings if it thinks that something is wrong. Such a Mondeo (maybe) is equipped with a number of control systems and aids, but in the end it is necessary to inform the driver about it. And the test Mondeo kept whistling something as a warning, even about things that are far from vital. His warnings are, to put it mildly, unpleasant. It can certainly be done just as effectively, but less annoyingly.

The same electronics can also display a lot of data, and for this they need a screen. In Mondeo, this one is large and fits between large sensors, but in the sun it hardly shows anything. The trip computer, which is one of the display options, can only display four data (current and average consumption, range, average speed), which is enough after sober thinking, but someone in Cologne thought it would automatically display sound after a short time. system menu.

But in short: the menus and data and information management are not particularly user-friendly.

In general, the ergonomics of controlling secondary devices in the Mondeo are average, starting with the already mentioned provision of information. However, we do not want to judge the appearance of the interior subjectively - but we can repeat the objective position: the design elements placed in the cabin are incompatible with each other, since they do not follow a single red thread.

And about the engine. This is unfriendly to the user when starting, as he knocks on starting and does not tolerate low revs, so since he does not pull in second gear when the cochlea is moving, it must be (too) often shifted into first gear.

But lest the totality of these outrages and comments affect the overall picture too much: from 2.000 rpm the engine becomes very good and well responsive (the progressive accelerator pedal response also makes a small contribution), Ford are one of the few that offer (also very efficient) electrically heated windshield (worth gold in the winter in the morning), its trunk is large and even expandable, the seats are very good, solid (especially in the back), with good lateral support, with hips in leather and in the middle in Alcantara, in addition, also five-speed heated and cooled (!), and in this generation Mondeo can offer quite a few modern pieces of safety equipment, starting with a good implementation (soft warning on the steering wheel) warning in case of accidental lane departure.

This means that there are people in Cologne who know about cars. If they tackle the aforementioned little things, the big picture becomes even more convincing.

evaluation

  • There is no reason to panic; It is in this combination that Mondeo is one of the most interesting - body (five doors), engine and equipment. And, most importantly, it is pleasant to drive a car. However, he has some bad qualities that are not seen in Ford or that he considers right.
