Short test: Honda CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC 4WD Elegance

The mild SUV Honda CR-V is a regular guest of our tests, if, of course, we will measure stability over the years. Honda is gradually updating its offer, as is, of course, the case with the CR-V. The current generation has been on the market since 2012 and Honda has significantly updated its engine lineup. So now the powerful 1,6-litre turbodiesel has also replaced the previous 2,2-litre i-DETC in the all-wheel-drive CR-V. Interestingly, now with a smaller engine displacement of 600 cubic centimeters, we get ten “horses” more than on the previous car. Of course, the accompanying technologies associated with the engine itself have changed significantly. The twin turbocharger now incurs an additional cost.

An even more modern injection system allows for much higher fuel injection pressures to keep everything running efficiently, as well as updated electronic engine management. With the CR-V, the customer can choose the power of the same large turbodiesel engine, but the 120 "horsepower" engine is only available with front-wheel drive, and the more powerful one connects only to all-wheel drive. ... Earlier this year, the CR-V also underwent some minor exterior changes (which were announced at last year's October Paris Motor Show). In fact, they are only noticeable when the "old" and "new" fourth-generation CR-Vs are located next to each other. The headlights have been changed, as have both bumpers, as well as the appearance of the rims. Honda says they have achieved a more reliable appearance. In any case, both bumpers have increased their length slightly (by 3,5 cm), and the track width has also changed slightly.

Inside, the improvements to the model are even less noticeable. A few changes in the quality of the material covering the interior are complemented by a new touchscreen infotainment system, and the number of outlets for electronic gadgets is also commendable. In addition to two USB connectors, there is also an HDMI connector. The best side of the combination of a more powerful 1,6-liter turbodiesel and all-wheel drive is flexibility. With the Eco button on the dashboard, you can choose between full engine power or slightly closed operation. Since rear-wheel drive is also automatically engaged and the wheels are not driven during normal driving, fuel consumption is very modest in this case. With average fuel consumption on our standard lap, the CR-V can also handle any average mid-range car.

But we were able to test the same modesty in terms of mileage on another Honda with a similar engine, the Civic, which is currently undergoing our extensive testing. Honda's all-wheel drive is less convincing if we drive off-road with the CR-V. He handles common traps in slippery terrain, but the electronics no longer allow him to do so. But since Honda had no intention of offering the CR-V to adrenaline-fueled off-roading extremists. With the updated Honda Connect system, which is included in the base price of Elegance equipment, Honda has taken a step towards customers who need the ability to connect their smartphones to the car. But the average user of such a connection has to come to terms with the rather complicated management of the information system. How they work can only be understood after careful study of the instructions for use.

This is difficult as it is difficult to find the individual elements that we want to study (there is no corresponding index). Controlling the functions also requires the driver to study the instructions for a long time and thoroughly, since there is no single menu control system, but a combination of buttons on the steering wheel that control data on two smaller screens (between the sensors and the center top on the dashboard) and a larger screen. And addition: if you do not pay attention and do not activate the large central screen when you start moving, you will have to call it from "sleep". All this, probably, should not be a problem for car owners, if they familiarize themselves with all instructions for use before use. But the CR-V definitely didn't get good marks for so-called driver-friendliness. Takeaway: The issue of controlling additional functions via the infotainment system aside, the CR-V, along with a powerful new engine and all-wheel drive, is definitely a good buy.
