Short test: Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi 4WD Platinum Edition

Well anyway; Italian words sound beautiful and evoke the enjoyment of life. Sorrento (but ignore the double r) !! Where will it take you? In a small popular resort town south of Naples. Beautiful Mediterranean Sea, mild climate, olives and red wine, tanned girls ...

We're in business. Well, the Sorento Chigi will only get you there if you put in a little bit of effort and money, otherwise this Sorento is a perfectly ordinary soft SUV that prefers to tread on pavement, does not protect rubble, mud or snow, but is too far and too bold. but don't try. It is nothing different from such creatures.

And we already know it. The latest iteration of this esjuvi swept away the previous generation of turbodiesels (2,5 litres, although such an engine is still sold) and introduced new engines that this 2,2 liter is well known for. It heats up very quickly before a cold start (intelligent preheat), runs quieter and quieter, easily - in lower gears of course - flips the red box (4.500 rpm) and can consume much less.

It can still be greedy in pursuit (but not as much as its predecessors), as it easily consumes 13 liters per 100 kilometers. This time around, the Sorento had a manual transmission, so it's easier to estimate fuel consumption as well. This is what the on-board computer says (the data follows for the fourth, fifth and sixth gears): at constant 100 km / h, it consumes eight, six and six liters per 100 km, at 130 11, 9 and 9, and at 160 15, 13 and 12 liters of gas oil per 100 km. Again, the consumption figures are very approximate as an imprecise digital "strip" meter is available to track current consumption. But they still set some kind of framework.

Just under 200 "horsepower" (145 kilowatts) in the engine constantly drives all wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, where (perhaps, but of course, depending on taste) the first gear is too short. This is because the Sorento is trying a bit to be an SUV (and because it doesn't have a gearbox after last year's refurbishment), i.e. to make it easier to control (speed) driving over unpredictable terrain. But in everyday driving, when you drive from traffic lights to traffic lights, it is too short, and the unpleasantly jerky gear shift movements that we haven't felt for some time add a little to this unsettling feeling.

Well, since the gears at the bottom are "compressed", they fail a little. This, of course, is reflected in the driving experience (and measured performance): the engine is surprisingly sharp from a stop, up to 100 kilometers per hour it is very lively, to all limits it is very powerful, and on the highway with speeding it goes out. Especially on slopes; the very good performance of such a Kia at almost 160 kilometers per hour is almost suddenly lost and becomes average. In itself, this is not surprising, because the empty one weighs almost a ton of eight hundred kilograms, and the front surface is not quite a coupe, the only thing that surprises a little is the tangible excess limit at the mentioned 160 kilometers per hour.

The Sorento is a pretty good off-road vehicle that's even a bit bigger on the outside than it is on the inside, and as one of the largest examples of its kind, it's also quite roomy on the inside. It was also well stocked with equipment (Platinum Edition), although the combination of equipment might not seem like the best. But what I'm talking about, the customer has no influence: the rear windows do not open automatically, electricity serves only the driver's seat, light beige leather at 14 thousand kilometers seems to be completely shabby (although allegedly only dirty), front seat heating is only one-stage , the on-board computer is rare and with a button between the instruments, this Soretno has no navigation and bluetooth and – at 36 XNUMX – no modern active safety features.

But all this can somehow be rented out, even if at first the owner gets tired of it. Much more disturbing is that the Sorento is (mostly) unfriendly difficult for the driver. Apart from the already mentioned jerky movements of the gear lever (and therefore the great effort required to turn the handle on it ...), it is rather difficult to turn the (too) large steering wheel, the pedals are not soft at all (especially for the grip) and the seat belt is tight.

But in Italy it is. Some things are beautiful, but not all. Even over Sorrento, after some strange network of circumstances, a rainy day can start due to the wild Vesuvius, so today no one moves to another place from there.

evaluation

  • The Sorento entered the market in 2002 and was refreshed seven years later, but behind the wheel it still feels like a model of the older generation. It has a very good engine, a drive like this, and its usability is significant thanks to the interior space and the flexibility of the trunk, but it does have some drawbacks that anyone who looks at its exterior might not be forgiven.
