Short test: Škoda Octavia Scout 2.0 TDI (135 kW) DSG 4 × 4

Why are we dragging the Octavia RS into the Scout story? Because when we talk about "heresy", we often thought that he might be a little softer, especially considering that he is not very athletic and is not intended to break records on the Nordschleife. To be able to have slightly less low tires. Or four-wheel drive, since 184 diesel "horses" are difficult (especially on bad or wet ground, not to mention snow) to drive on the road.

And when the test Scout came to the editorial office, we, of course, wondered if we were thinking about this in the Octavia RS. And no, it isn't. Of course not. Its belly is 3,1 centimeters higher than the ground than a regular four-wheel drive Octavia, and the RS is lower than a classic one. And placing the center of gravity a few inches higher, of course, dramatically changes the position on the road and the steering. Since it's also designed to be used on rough roads, the Scout isn't quite as sporty as the RS. Then the whole story is from a completely different movie.

Which, of course, does not mean that something is wrong with the Octavia Scout. Already visually it's a very pretty car, especially for those who like a slightly plumper off-road look but don't like crossovers. The Octavia Scout falls into the category of “slightly more off-road caravans” rather than crossovers, such as the Alltracks Volkswagen, Allroads Audi and, conditionally, the Seat Leon X-Perience (conditionally, because the first three are only available with all-wheel drive, and the Seat is only available with front-wheel drive). ). Therefore, it has two different bumpers that already look more durable and have black plastic inserts that are resistant to impact. Also "Protection" was given to the front underbody (in quotation marks because it is plastic and because in the field it is too protruding and the holes in it are covered with dirt), the body sill is also protected by black plastic strips. In short, visually, the Scout has everything that such a machine should have, the chassis is slightly higher (the belly is a little more than 17 centimeters from the ground) and, accordingly, a greater seat distance from the ground will come to those who do not like (or cannot)) snuggle deeply against earth.

Technically, the Scout holds no surprises: with its 184 “horsepower”, the two-litre TDI is more than powerful enough, yet flexible enough to pull (along with a six-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox) very continuously, almost like a naturally aspirated engine – and therefore, the driver sometimes gets the feeling that the Octavia Scout is slower than it actually is. The fifth generation Haldex clutch makes the distribution of torque between the axles almost imperceptible, and the Octavia Scout, of course, mostly understeer. On slippery roads, pressing the accelerator pedal hard can lower the rear of the car, but this way of driving the Scout won't feel right at home. Four-wheel drive is here for safety reasons, not for sporting reasons.

Consumption? The 5,3-litre engine on our standard lap is exactly what you'd expect, and two-tenths more than the Octavia Combi RS (mostly due to all-wheel drive and more front surface). In short, usually favorable, which also applies to an average test value of six and a half liters.

Interior? Comfortable enough (with good seats), quiet enough and spacious enough (including a large trunk). Especially in the back, there's noticeably more room than in the old Scout, and this Octavia could be the perfect family car, even for an above-average family of four. Since the Octavia Scout is based on the Octavia Combi with Elegance equipment, its equipment is rich. Active bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, a 15cm LCD touchscreen radio, Bluetooth hands-free system are also standard – so 32, which is the price of a standard Octavia Scout, is a relatively affordable price.

Of course it could be higher. In the test, for example, there were a plethora of accessories, from automatic light switching (works great) to active cruise control (which, since the Octavia is a Skoda, just can't handle automated driving in city crowds like more expensive corporate vehicles). brands) to navigation (which, of course, works no better than on mobile). Therefore, the final price, which amounted to a little more than 42 thousand, is not surprising - but a bunch of accessories could easily be abandoned. Then the price would be much cheaper.

evaluation

  • The Octavia Scout is a great example of a good performance family car. Whether or not you need that kind of capacity and equipment is of course a question for every buyer, and for those who want all-wheel drive but not everything else, the Octavia Combi is also available without the Scout label, but still with four wheels. - wheel drive!
