Short test: Škoda Superb Combi 2.0 TDI (125 kW) DSG Elegance

After testing the five-door version of the facelifted Škoda Superb last fall, it was Superb's turn with the Combi label. This is suitable for those owners who, when going on a car trip, usually do not have enough space for luggage. It's very hard for me to imagine that they would have similar problems with this Superb. So: The most important feature of Superb is definitely spaciousness. Even the two seated in the front travel very comfortably without feeling cramped, and the same goes for the two (or three) seated in the back.

Who sits on the back of the Superb bench for the first time, who can't believe how much room there is, especially for the legs. Even if they want to cross them, this is not a problem, those who are a little shorter can even stretch them. But in the trunk there are 635 liters of space for passengers. And here the Škoda Superb proved to be a very generous vehicle. In addition to the boot size (which can be expanded to 1.865 liters of luggage space when we don't need a rear bench), we also praise the flexibility. Namely, if we carry only a small amount of luggage, it can be attached to the trunk in two ways. By cleverly folding the double bottom, you can change the design of the trunk or use additional luggage racks, which are installed on two rails installed in the Superb trunk. In short: Škoda also offers a little more luggage (but you have to pay extra for this extra).

However, this does not only apply to this accessory, the electric tailgate opener is also on the accessory list and this caused quite a few problems with the tried and tested Superb, as the electric assistance went out of order and in the end the tailgate could only be closed. with considerable strength.

In general, a special thanks to the combination of a more powerful two-liter turbodiesel and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG), as they complement each other very well. They also have a good effect, as the driver with a shift lever does not have to worry about finding the right speed, and the additional sport program also increases the comfort of leisurely driving when there is a desire for adequate engine support when going faster or safer overtaking. on normal roads. The Superb also comes with hand levers on the steering wheel, but the driver doesn't seem to need them at all for normal driving - more comfortable and comfort oriented, of course.

The two-litre Superb engine is actually the penultimate generation of the Volkswagen generation TDI, slightly less powerful than the last generation. But we still don't feel a big lack of power in the Superb (which again, of course, applies to those who are not in a hurry). The engine manifests itself in one more thing - fuel consumption. On a standard lap, we achieved an average official fuel consumption of 5,4 liters per 100 km, which was a big surprise given the fact that we were driving with winter tires. However, it should be noted that the Superb also performed well in all of our fuel consumption tests, from 6,6 liters per 100 kilometers.

Slightly less pleased with the Superb's infotainment controls. The Columbus navigation system and speakerphone work well, but the operation is time consuming and the switches need to be “attacked” together by two screens, a larger one on the center console and a smaller one nestled between two gauges in the dash. There are also more control buttons, so the driver needs some time before he understands the rather unintuitive way to control. In this area, the new Octavia has already successfully shown which way it will have to go, but with the Superb, this part of the repair will only be possible with the new one, which can be expected in about a year or more.

But the feeling of well-being and adequate driving comfort in the Superb is enough for the driver to quickly forget the initial problems with a few more instructions. Moreover, the Superb's position on the road is also reliable. Thus, the conclusion can be drawn: the prudent buyer looking for a spacious, powerful, but at the same time economical and, above all, comfortable van cannot miss the Superb. Let Škoda be Czech for him.
