Short test: Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde

Probably half a year has passed, maybe even all four seasons, when we talked about selling Mercedes-Benz in Slovenia. At the time, I was surprised by the announcement that they were more than dissatisfied with niche products, but they had problems with the C, E and S classes. Hi gentlemen, they should be the cornerstone of sales!

Taking this fact into account clarifies a lot. Class C was given two objectives: to reach out to younger clients and to prove themselves as they enter the world. prestigious limousineswhere the star of Stuttgart is located. So they did the most dynamic class C in history, whether it is shape or driving feel, and used a little trick.

You can think of a C class in a package The elegance of Ali Avant-garde for calmer and more dynamic clients. At Mercedes, they probably don't care about older customers, as they are still convinced that Mercedes-Benz is the only real one. Even my father, who is not from the south, always looks at me with curiosity when I tell him that I drive a Mercedes. “Oooh, luxury,” he usually suggests, and I don’t want to explain anymore that this is necessary. luxury to pay, because there is no worse Mercedes in the basic configuration. What about the younger ones? They don't even look at cars with a star on their nose, only AMG versions (see News) increase the pressure. But what if they are expensive. And they go to the rivals.

Can the Avantgarde Class C overcome this? It is difficult with such a shape and price, although I believe that in Mercedes dealerships they have become much more flexible. Despite its dynamic form, it is also avant-garde. too classicto satisfy more and more spoiled young people with differently shaped slats and steering wheel. Also rear drive - Unlike BMW, this is not quite a trading trump card.

But let's look a little looser, without taking into account history or difficult times that require quick changes. It sits very well in the new C-Class, comfort is top notch, refinement is another name for it. The gauge graphics are excellent, Becker has taken care of a real little opera house, the big screen navigation is pampering. If you turn on the LEDs, active headlights and blind spot warning, then this car package is all about mechanics and electronics. more than convincing.

The combination of a 2,1-liter turbo diesel and 7G-Tronic Plus transmission promises even more. Admittedly, only the four-cylinder offers what 125 kilowatts in seven-speed gearbox, which was recently only available in the C class, seems like a great collaborator. As long as the driver is calm, the engine and transmission are also very smooth. There is almost no noise, and shift shifts are history. "Mercedes" says, without a doubt, comfort or prestige.

Then we push the accelerator a little harder and notice that the steering system is more precise and the steering wheel feel is more pronounced than you'd expect from a star car, and rear-wheel drive can be fun if you like it. Unfortunately, you also feel that engine and transmission overloadedbecause the first one rolls up its sleeves (too) loudly, so overtaking slower cars will be stress-free.

Where did they hide it all 125 kilowatts, I do not know, but it would definitely be due to such power and already a seven-speed gearbox (whether in the Eco or Sport program) expected more – especially at full load. But measurements have shown that with the C 220 CDI you can get up to 230 km / h and you hit 100-8,5 km / h in just XNUMX seconds, which is in line with factory promises, and honestly: more than enough. The sensations themselves are not as real as they would like to make you take a leisurely ride through Stuttgart, when the modern crew is also becoming more environmentally friendly.

label BlueEFFICIENCY means that whales with all modern technologies that reduce consumptionwith direct fuel injection, smart fuel and oil pumps, improved gearbox and lower rolling resistance tires, for example, but we must not forget the system ECO Start and Stop... The automatic shutdown system works flawlessly during short stops and suddenly starts the engine when you release the brake pedal and step on the gas pedal, and when restarting, the engine simply silently warns of its operation.

It should be borne in mind that under the hood is a turbodiesel, on petrol brother more and more just - and friendlier. In short, gas station fans of the black filling "gun" will not be disappointed.

If we were to say that the Mercedes house (still) consists of four foundations (grades A, C, E and S), they obviously undertook an overhaul of one of the pillars. If you adhere to the symbolism of the house, then this pillar is closest to the door to their kingdom. This is why it is so much more important. But the renovation is slow, so it looks like the house for a while will be more of a building site than a palace. It's promising, but it's not over yet.

evaluation

  • Definitely class C, which is by far the closest to the younger population. But satisfying old and young alike – despite the division between elegance and avant-garde – is not as easy as Mercedes-Benz thinks or wants. It will take more if they want to overtake the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series.
