Short test: Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 4Matic

GLK is the smallest Mercedes SUV. But at the moment it turns out that with its height of just over four and a half meters, it is quite large. Judging by its appearance and incompatibility with the new fashion line of the world's oldest automaker Stuttgart, it seems timeless. However, if we put A or B cars in the GLK, and soon S, it will be like some of the other times when Mercedes still believed that form determines the purpose of use.

It seems to be an example of "design follows function". Sure, in many ways it resembles Mercedes' first SUV, the G, but it's also true that its usability could have been better despite its very boxy shape. Transparency is not its hallmark. Even the trunk when using the rear passenger bench (which is very spacious) is not exactly big, but for normal shorter trips it is enough.

Overall, we don't seem to have any serious comments other than the looks, which are related to individual taste, on the Mercedes GLK. Already in our test at the time of its release, the GLK received all the accolades. It was then powered by a much more powerful 224 horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine, but now Mercedes has also significantly reduced the engine range and a 170 horsepower four-cylinder is enough for the base GLK.

It is clear that from the point of view of power, he cannot now boast of such sovereignty. But the combination of engine and seven-speed automatic transmission is convincing. The only thing that bothers me a little is the optional start-stop system, which reacts quickly when the car is stopped and immediately stops the engine. If the next moment needs to start again, the driver is sometimes tempted to turn off the system. Perhaps the Mercedes engineers will be able to resolve the issue by interrupting the engine, only after the driver presses the brake pedal a little more decisively ...

The 2,2-liter turbodiesel engine alone has to support the car's 1,8 tonnes, which is not as much known in day-to-day use as the average consumption in our test, which was three liters above the combined norm. This is, of course, a surprise, but it was not possible to reduce the average costs.

Of course, you deny that in Mercedes cars, few people talk about economy, but more about comfort and luxury. As for the latter, the buyer can indeed choose from a variety of things. Well, our test GLK only had the basic equipment from the infotainment system (radio) offering, so adding equipment to the final price wasn't too common. The client has many options to choose many more. In fact, in the GLK test, the undersigned felt that the lack of conventional equipment was affecting the driver's sense of superiority and superiority. But all this did not affect the final grade, a good car for good money.
