Short test: Mini Countryman Cooper SD All4

The Mini Countryman? This is the largest and most spacious among the Minias (although the new five-door has come pretty close to it). Then something like a maxi among the Mini. And also among the elderly, since the Countryman is already a good five years old. Sure, it has been (recently) adapted alongside the more "rejected" but less practical Paceman, but mostly it has stayed the same. This means that it is much more interesting, more varied, sportier and more prestigious than the more plebeian examples of hybrids in this size class, but at the same time more durable and less comfortable than its premium competitors. So there is something in between.

The renovation did not mean major technical innovations for the Countryman, it was more about redecoration and harmonization with fashion principles (including LED daytime running lights), and therefore the Countryman still lacks modern assistance systems such as those. which can be easily obtained from them BMW), LED headlights and more. But you may have to wait for the new Countryman. Regardless of age, the Countryman can easily be described as a crossover athlete. Not in terms of the engine, but in terms of the nose of (its most powerful) turbodiesel, not some really powerful turbocharged gasoline engine that you might recall from some of the premium competitors, but still.

This is evidenced, for example, by its transmission, which has precise, positive movements, and above all, its chassis proves it. It is durable and therefore not the most comfortable (sitting in the back on short bumps can be quite uncomfortable), but such a chassis has its advantages: along with an extremely precise (for this class of cars, of course) steering wheel, which offers a lot of reviews, this Mini great for sportier driving. And there is no need to push it to the limits of performance: this chassis reveals all its charms already, say, in a calm sports ride. And while its all-wheel drive is almost invisible on tarmac, it is enjoyable on slippery surfaces and can transfer enough torque to the rear wheels that a driver can imagine gliding down dunes and gravel roads in the style of Dakar rally winners.

Engine? The SD designation stands for a 143-horsepower turbodiesel, an old acquaintance that was modified during refurbishment, mainly to reduce noise and lower consumption. The 5,8-liter result on our standard lap is quite favorable in terms of size, weight and all-wheel drive (also compared to the competition), and the test consumption is 8,1 liters more due to the snow. and countryman fun in these conditions. The interior (in terms of design) is of course a classic Mini. In the front it was possible (except for the higher seats) to sit in any Mini, in the back it is not bad, the trunk is also smaller due to the all-wheel drive between (depending on the external dimensions of the car), but for normal it is quite enough. (family) needs.

A glance at the price list can cool the enthusiasm a little: a little more than 39 thousand according to the price list costs such a Countryman as a test one. You can save a good thousand if you ditch the Wired package (which also includes the navigation device that more and more users have on their smartphones) and just add a few infotainment details, but the fact remains: the Mini is not for everyone. because of the price. Last but not least, there is nothing wrong with that.

evaluation

  • The Mini Countryman is not a crossover for everyone. Not so much because of the price, but because of its character. It's just too different, uncompromising, even sporty to please everyone. But it has a lot to offer those who are looking for just that.
