Short test: Mitsubishi ASX 1.8 DI-D 2WD Invite

Despite the fact that three years have passed, the changes in the newcomer are minor. A new grille, a slightly modified bumper, mirrors and headlights are the differences that are visible from the outside. Even inside, the design remains the same, with only a few cosmetic fixes such as new covers and a slightly redesigned steering wheel.

The main focus of the overhaul is on the modified diesel engine lineup, as a 2,2-liter turbodiesel has been added to it, and the 1,8-liter is now available in two versions, 110 or 85 kilowatts. And it was the last, weaker, only front-wheel-drive available that entered our test fleet.

Fears that the entry-level turbodiesel was too weak for the ASX suddenly vanished. It's true that you won't win from traffic light to traffic light, and that you'll definitely put someone down in front of you while driving down the Vrhnika slope, but 85 kilowatts is a force to be reckoned with. This merit and excellent six-speed gearbox with perfectly calculated gears. Consumption is easily kept below seven liters, even if most of our route is on the highway. More annoying noise and vibration can be detected at cold start and at higher engine speeds.

The interior is dominated by seemingly cheap materials, but the sensations when touching plastic do not confirm this. Ergonomics and quick adaptation to the entire dashboard are the main selling points of the ASX, so it is likely to find a lot of customers among the older population. There's just no button to ask what it's for. Even operating the audio system is very easy, as it offers nothing more than basic tasks. If it still had a Bluetooth connection (which today, more from a security point of view than from a comfort point of view, is almost mandatory equipment), then the fact that it is too simple would definitely not be considered a disadvantage.

The rest of the car has no notable features. It sits well in the back as the padding is quite soft and there is plenty of legroom. It can be difficult to find the Isofix mounts, as they are well hidden at the junction of the seat and backrest. Trunk volume of 442 liters is a good indicator in the class of SUVs of this size. The design and workmanship are exemplary, and it is very easy to increase by lowering the back of the bench.

For fun in the field in the ASX, a different engine / transmission combination must be selected. A car like our test car is only good for driving on dusty gravel or climbing some higher curb in town. Although it has a higher center of gravity than some ("off-road") riders, cornering is not a problem for it. The position is surprisingly good and the electric power steering responds well. Only the drive wheelset sometimes quickly loses traction when accelerating on a wet road.

Just as the ASX is no different from the average, its price is set quite strategically. Anyone looking for a car of this class will not be able to miss the advantageous offer from the Mitsubishi price list. Such a motorized ASX with mid-level invite equipment will get you a little less than 23 thousand. Considering that Mitsubishi model updates are usually not drastic, you will have an up-to-date and decent car for a long time for little money.

  • It does not attract attention in any way, but we cannot pass by it when we are looking for a decent, elegant and reliable car in this class of cars. Choose a more powerful engine only if you still need four-wheel drive.
