Short test: Opel Astra GTC 2.0 CDTI (121 kW) Sport

GTC is a beautiful car

Of course, not all German cars are just a Golfi 1.9 TDI Rabbit, and all the others don't look like an Alfa Romeo 156 GTA, so the Astra GTC is also not a German car in the above sense. At first glance, it is clear that he wants to evoke emotions with his appearance, and not in the same way as, say, the Golf GTI. Admittedly: The Astra GTC is a beautifully painted car. Low, puffy, with soft smooth lines, beautifully filled with large tracks and short overhangs. We have heard (actually read on Facebook) claims of similarities to Renault's Megane and we partially agree with that. Look at the car from the side and at the lines drawn to the hood from the A-pillars ... Well, there is no need to fear that a neighbor might guess the brand. Unless he does it on purpose due to availability.

Not even the three-door Astra!

The fact that the GTC is what it is, the designers had to sacrifice some practicality to the detriment of the external design. Trunk loading edge, which is opened with a remote key or by pressing the bottom of the Opel badge on the door, is tall and thick, so loading heavier items is less pleasant. Even if you look for a seat belt far over your shoulder, it will quickly become clear to you that you are sitting in a three-door coupe and not in a family limousine. Recall the manufacturer's information that the GTC only shares door handles, mirror housings and an antenna with the regular Astro. GTC is not just a three-door Astra!

Behind the wheel, you can see that we are sitting in an Opel. Manufacturing and materials they look and feel good, the same can be said for the controls and switches. There are definitely too many of them, which makes it almost impossible to intuitively press or turn right in the first few kilometers. But yes, once you get used to the car, this way of controlling functions can be faster than clicking on the selectors.

The location on the road is commendable.

One of the features of the Astra GTC is the installation of the front wheels. HiPerStrutwhich prevents the steering wheel from pulling when accelerating out of bends. With a power of 121 kilowatts, as much as a two-liter turbodiesel can handle, full throttle in the first three gears (or at least two) could already "control" the steering wheel, but this is not so. The case works in practice, and if you add up the fairly straight steering gear, stiff suspension, large tires and a firm body, the car can be described as pleasantly sporty and with a very good road position. But he has one awkward deficit: The steering wheel must be constantly adjusted over several kilometers of the motorway. Not much, but enough to make it boring.

Economical beauty

What kind turbodiesel, is it suitable for GTC? If you've traveled many miles and your wallet is talking, then the answer is probably yes. At 130 km / h, the on-board computer shows the current consumption. 6,4 l / 100 km, but the average for the test was not much higher. This is not a record low level, but not too much for such a power supply unit. Another question is whether you are willing to tolerate a less modified engine compared to a gasoline one. In the six gears of the transmission, the lever moves precisely and without jamming, it only requires a little more effort.
