Brief test: Opel Insignia 2.0 CDTI (103 kW) Cosmo (5 doors)

We hate to be unfair, but we are not much mistaken if we attribute the revival of Opel and especially the credit for it to the Insignia. Of course, other models like the Mokka, Astra and finally the Cascada have also contributed, but the most coveted Opel is the Insignia. And we will repeat once again: this is not strange, since a good four years ago in Rüsselsheim, at the presentation of the origins of a new middle-class car, they declared that they had invested all their knowledge and experience in it. And the Opel Insignia was built and lived up to expectations. In fact, for many, it even surpassed them, and I mean here not only the title of the European car won in 2009, but above all all other titles from around the world, which clearly showed that Opel is on the right track. And above all, their product was well received not only in Europe, but wherever it appeared or was sold.

There is nothing special about the updated Insignia. I don’t remember the last time so many people turned to a car, especially since this is not a special novelty or even a new model. Okay, let me clarify something right away: Opel declares that the new Insignia is "in use", we will say, it is a modernized one. We don't mean anything wrong with that, but there are so few design changes that we can't talk about a new car, especially since the Insignia test was a five-door version.

And in just four years of life, this car did not even need a major overhaul. So Opel did not complicate anything, but changed what was not pleasant and left what was good. Thus, the shape has remained much the same, with only a few cosmetic fixes added and given a new light. Yes, these are also Slovenian, and although the company is owned by Germany (Hella), we will say that they work in the Slovenian Saturnus. In the new image, the Insignia boasts a recognizable and lower grille, making the Insignia one of the most aerodynamic passenger cars on the market with a drag coefficient and a Cd of just 0,25.

Several changes have affected the interior of the car, primarily the driver's workplace, which has now become simpler, more transparent and easier to operate. They also completely redesigned the center console, removing too many buttons and features and making it much simpler. There are only a few buttons or switches left on it, and they control the entire infotainment system and air conditioning quickly, easily and intuitively. The infotainment system from the IntelliLink family can be controlled using an eight-inch color screen, also touch-sensitive, using steering wheel switches, using voice control or using the new sliding plate installed on the center console between the seats, which are also sensitive to touch and they even recognize the font when we swipe it with our fingertip.

They have further optimized the gauges on the dashboard, added an eight-inch high-resolution color display that can display classic gauges such as speed, engine rpm and fuel tank level, and in the driver's direct field of view, it can display details of the navigation device, smartphone use and data on operation of the audio device. Easy central system control, mobile phone connection, etc.

Under the hood of the tested Insignia was a two-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which, with its 140 horsepower, is in the middle of the whole range. It's not the sharpest, but above average thanks to a good start-stop system. Compared to older Opel diesel engines, it is much quieter and runs much smoother. Therefore, such a trip is also desirable. The Insignia isn't a race car, it's a decent passenger car that isn't afraid of faster, twisty roads, but doesn't like it too much either. And if this is at least a little taken into account, then the engine is bought with low fuel consumption, which on our standard lap was only 4,5 liters per 100 kilometers. Nice, slow, fun...

evaluation

  • The Opel Insignia is not surprising in terms of design, but impressive with its perfectly redesigned interior, which is more comfortable for the driver and easier to use. The car may not be the most affordable, but it allows you to choose from a range of standard and optional equipment so that the car owner can equip the car with the things they really need.
