Short test: Opel Insignia ST 2,0 Ultimate (2021) // Wolf in Armani suit

Want a lot of space, a long and comfortable touring car, but don't swear at electricity or crossovers? Nothing is easier Opel still has a car that defies these and other whims of modern buyers in many ways.... Thank goodness there are still traditionalists betting on caravans and a decent diesel engine. Because the benefits of this combination are manifested mainly on the track and on long journeys.

How else would I appreciate this remarkable example of Opel's automotive philosophy, as it has proven to be a reliable companion on long journeys. By releasing a new and updated first generation in early spring that has been on the market since 2017, they have managed to continue the story of the original Insignia.... It still remains a sleek and dynamic car that will make you feel like a master on the road and I could easily write for it that it's kind of wolf in a suit from Armani... The design is exactly what a modern mobile home should be, with all the lines, but also with a sporty serenity, so it seems like it can do much more than you might attribute to it at first glance.

And this is indeed so, which, of course, was taken care of by the engine, which continues this story with wolves. Calm, quiet, cultured and, most importantly, powerful. I would not expect anything less than 128 kilowatts (174 hp), and besides moderately economical, since the consumption is about seven liters per 100 km.... However, with less aggression and more Armani, that number could fall well below seven. And even if not, he decisively gets to work, if only the driver additionally encourages him with the accelerator pedal, and he responds perfectly to the driver's commands in all operating modes.

In the interior, of course, there are no doubts, everything is as it should be, the buttons are at hand, some are also completely classic, so that the driver does not have to search too much on the central screen, and the feeling of quality prevails thanks to good materials and solid work. ...This is just one of the cars in which I almost instantly found the optimal driving position and, as such, turned out to be an excellent companion on long trips.... Even all modern electronics "somewhere here", just right, but not interfering. The systems can be switched on and off quickly and easily, so this has also been taken into account in the design of the vehicle and the interior.

But since every wolf has a different temperament, Insignia has it too. However, the main culprit is the automatic transmission. It has eight gears and shifts quickly, but sometimes too jerkily, and when starting off, the driver has to brake with his right foot on the accelerator pedal.if he does not want to surprise passengers with an extra squeak. When the driver moves the lever to the packing position, the car bounces forward a bit, an inch or two, and at first I was very surprised, especially when I parked a little tighter, which is not surprising or unusual given the length of the journey. a car.

Because the wolf in Armani is almost five meters long, which is quite acceptable at an early age, so that the car remains manageable and offers an optimal ratio between external and internal dimensions. So I still say yes The first and main territory of residence of Insignia is not city streets, but a highway or at least an open local road.where he takes turns with controlled coolness and amazing comfort.

An extensive wheelbase of 2,83 meters also contributes to the quiet cornering, as well as the comfort of the rear seats and a large boot. With a base 560 liters (up to 1655 litres), this is exactly what the Insignia customer is looking for – and getting. And a little more, once I got used to the electric door opening system using a swing leg under the rear bumper. From the foot-operated electric opening and closing of the tailgate, I switched a hell of a lot to this “manual operation”.

Despite all the positives of the Insignia ST, I can't miss another less enjoyable one. The car basically costs almost 38.500 42.000 euros, but with some extra equipment as in the test model, the price has gone up to a good one, and unfortunately it does not have a parking camera in the rear of the car.... Yes, it has sensors for safer parking, but with this length and dimensions I would almost expect a rearview camera. It is pleasant to hear, but to see is even better.

When I draw a line under this Insignia, however, there are many more positive qualities than those that bring less satisfaction., so the driver and, of course, passengers will be satisfied with this car. It offers a lot for the price of a slightly thicker family budget, but that's also a price that's common to comparable competitors, so I'd say the Insignia is somewhere in the green zone as well.

Today, of course, there is a price for liters and centimeters, spaciousness and graceful motor horses. So someone who needs a car this big will get a lot from the Insignia, and someone who values engine performance (with moderate consumption) but at the same time bets on the knowledge that a car can do a little more when needed. will do great. four-wheeled.
