Short test: Opel Meriva 1.6 CDTi Cosmo

After (or close to) the refurbishment, the Meriva also received a new 1,6-litre turbodiesel. However, he was promised low consumption and low emissions. After all, its standard ECE combined consumption is just 4,4 liters, even for the 100kW or 136bhp version (with Start & Stop) that was used for the test Meriva. But in practice, things are different - we already found this in the Zafira test with the same engine - because the engine is not exactly a lifesaver. Consumption of 5,9 liters on a standard lap is much higher than expected, as it turned out to be even higher than the Zafira. The third option that this engine will get in the Astra (this one in our busy September schedule) might at least be more economical.

Interestingly, with this engine, the difference between the factory-declared data and our standard flow rate is one of the largest on our list, and the difference between the standard flow rate and the test flow rate is one of the smallest, at just 0,7 liters. Despite the abundance of highway kilometers, the Meriva consumed on average only 6,6 liters of fuel in the test, which is a favorable result depending on the way of use (how much less it would be if there were less kilometers on the highway, due to its small size) ... the difference in consumption in the normal range is difficult to estimate, probably by two or three deciliters). From the looks of it, this engine just doesn't like fuel-efficient driving and does best on moderately harsh speeds.

On the other hand, it has a fairly smooth and quiet operation and sufficient flexibility. Combined with a six-speed manual transmission, this is a great choice for the Meriva when fuel consumption is not an issue.

The Cosmo label also signifies a wealth of equipment, from dual-zone automatic air conditioning to cruise control, a steering wheel with audio controls, adjustable drawers between the seats (FlexRail) to automatic lighting (they now also eliminate delays with lighting in the tunnel), a rain sensor and improved seats. With optional Premium and Connect packages that let you make hands-free calls and play music from your cell phone, a parking system and tinted rear windows, this Meriva has everything you need for less than $21 list price.

You probably know that the back door opens back. Meriva is a feature - some people don't see the point in it, but experience has shown that this way of opening the door is more convenient for people with disabilities, for parents with small children and for those who like to sit in a chair. front seat, which was quickly put on the last one. Yes, sliding doors would (in tight parking lots) be even more practical, but they're also more expensive and heavier. Meriva's solution is an excellent compromise. And because the trunk (for a car of this size) is quite large, because there is enough space in the rear seats, and also because he also sits comfortably behind the wheel (when the driver gets used to a slight offset or a vertically sloping steering wheel), oh such Meriva is easy to write: it is a very good compromise between size and capacity, between equipment and price…
