Toyota Auris Brief Test

As we are used to Far Eastern car brands, updates are more frequent and slightly less noticeable. The second generation Auris did not adhere to this unwritten rule, so the changes in appearance are less significant than changes in the technical area. The shape of the Auris remains recognizable, jokingly it can be said that it was only slightly sharpened by a katana. The lights have also been updated and the daytime running lights now feature a slightly more recognizable LED signature. The interior design is not quite to the taste of avant-garde artists, restrained souls will identify with style. This, of course, helps to improve the usability and ergonomics as it is so easy to get used to and operate.

Looking through the steering wheel, you can see the new gauges with an updated center display that shows on-board computer data, but unfortunately they cannot be displayed at the set cruise control speeds. Even the new touchscreen will offer you a selection of fun and informative content without having to read a week of instructions. For ease of use, the only thing we lacked was the classic rotary knob for adjusting the audio system volume. While the previous generation Auris was also considered a reasonably comfortable tuned car, that didn't stop Toyota technicians from focusing even more on chassis tuning. Now it has become much quieter, and the car remains balanced and undemanding to drive. The main innovation of the redesigned Auris is a new 1,2-liter four-cylinder engine with turbocharging, direct fuel injection and improved valve timing. Such an engine develops a power of 85 kilowatts with a maximum torque of 185 Newton meters in the range from 1.500 to 4.000 engine revolutions.

Because the downsizing trend with more cylinders didn't stop it, running was much quieter, smoother and richer in low-end torque. Even a small turbocharger spins fast, making the usable torque range even wider for such a small engine size. This Auris sprints to 10,1 km/h in 200 seconds, and the promised top speed of 5,8 kilometers per hour is not unattainable. If you load it up with two extra passengers in the back - there's plenty of room - some of that power will be gone, but driving dynamics won't suffer, as the six-speed manual is well-timed to pick up a little more revs quickly. As is common with small displacement turbocharged engines, consumption can vary greatly. Thus, on a normal lap, it consumed a tolerable 7,5 liters, while the test consumption was 100 liters per XNUMX kilometers of travel. With the release of the new Auris, Toyota has taken a big step in the fight against competitors, which are mostly equipped with new, more modern engines. In any case, there were no concerns about the form, usability, materials, quality.

evaluation

  • In addition to all the things that adorn the redesign of the classic model, the new Auris is most proud of the new engine, which will surely satisfy a wide range of customers and replace the 1,6-liter engine that has been the first choice so far. customers who want gasoline.
