Brief test: Volkswagen Multivan 2.0 TDI (2019) // Popotnik

The Volkswagen Multivan is actually a kind of synonym for fast and comfortable long-distance transport, especially if it is motorized and equipped as it was tested. That means a turbodiesel capable of developing a healthy 150 "horsepower", an automatic transmission and plenty of auxiliary equipment.

The engine is powerful enough to make this Multivan perform well even on long trails where higher speeds are also permitted. Up to 160 kilometers per hour does not feel like much effort, and even when fully loaded, it is best felt at just a slightly slower speed.... At that time, the consumption is not the most favorable, it revolves around ten liters, but since in our country and in most neighboring countries the speed limit is slightly lower, then there will be consumption: if you drive at a speed of 130 kilometers per hour, it will be below nine liters. This means that the range with a full tank of fuel is much more than the average human bladder can handle.

Because Multivan (especially in the back) not too spring loaded, no problem even on bad roads. The soundproofing is good enough, and because the automatic transmission provides unobtrusive and quick shifting, passengers can't tire even of the driver, who will have trouble coordinating hands and feet when shifting. They will be well served by reasonably comfortable seats, especially since the interior is comfortable and flexible. In the second row, there are two separate seats that can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction (as well as a three-seat bench in the back). Their only drawback is that there is no passage under them for longer and narrower items (for example, skis) than for the back bench. Therefore, for ski trips of more than five passengers (this Multivan is a seven-seater), we recommend a roof rack.

The driver is, of course, well taken care of - both the position behind the wheel, with the two-speed automatic transmission and cruise control making it easy, and the lane departure warning system. When we add good smartphone connectivity (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and good headlights, it becomes clear that the driver, no matter how long the route is, is not serious.

And that's the point of such a machine, right?

The Multivan remains a great choice if you need to travel far, with a lot of passengers and with maximum comfort. It just needs to be properly equipped.
