Short test: Volvo V40 D4 Cross Country Summum

Volvo has long been a candidate for a successful premium brand, but the direction in which its leadership is trying to find the right one is often changing. In developing the smallest models, they teamed up with other manufacturers from Renault, Mitsubishi and Ford. However, this time they opted for a completely independent building project. As such, the Volvo V40 is in many ways similar to the slightly larger model with the 60 mark, which is especially noticeable in the engines.

The V40 model tested this time with the optional CrossCountry label has a few changes as there is a bit of confusion with this label as well. In the V70 style, we have to add the XC add-on, but it is for a model that hasn't come out yet and should be Volvo's interpretation of the crossover and SUV. The V40 Cross Country, by contrast, is just a slightly raised passenger car with plastic trim on the sides and additional protective covers under the front and rear bumpers. In fact, a very unusual car, if Volvo has all-wheel drive, is its only competitor in the entire Subaru XV lineup.

If there are so few competitors, does this mean that there are also few buyers for this type of car? Given what Cross Country has to offer, I couldn't say for sure. The V40 CC convinces when used in everything. However, the problem is probably that the number of such clients who really need it is quite limited. On the one hand, I can say that it offers enough prestige, comfort and exemplary usability, but it is also true that many customers who choose crossovers or SUVs of similar length have a different idea of space. The V40 CC has plenty of room for a front passenger, but in order to have enough room in the rear, larger front passengers must give way to the outer rear seat. The biggest discrepancy between the expectations of ordinary stakeholders and what they get from the Volvo V40 CC is the boot size. It turns out that with a fully occupied back seat, we cannot take a lot of luggage with us - and vice versa.

In our test of a similar Volvo V40 (Auto Shop, # 23, 2012) with the exact same engine and transmission, these components were the most convincing, and the same goes for the version with the Cross Country label. Even the fuel economy in terms of vehicle weight and engine power, as well as the quality of the materials used and workmanship, are encouraging. Volvo has indeed taken some decisive steps in this direction lately. Thus, it fully meets the requirements of a "premium" class, and this is also the greatest attention that Volvo wants to convey to its customers. It's the same with the wide range of accessories, especially protective ones like City Safety and a pedestrian airbag, which you can't even get from other car brands.

This XC is special and as such you should take it, comparing to any other car doesn't seem to be warranted.
