Who are Disney princesses and why do we love them?

Every child has heard about Disney princesses, and even many adults associate Bella, Ariel or Cinderella with many. But not everyone knows that joining this elite group is not so easy. We tell who these unique heroines are and what their phenomenon is.

Disney animated films have been known all over the world since 1923, and their characters often live outside of fairy tales. Such is the case with the famous Disney princesses who have a whole series of gadgets, books and toys. Each heroine is tied to a certain title, but together they form a closed group, which is not so easy to get into. Why didn't all virgins with royal bloodlines get this honor? As it turns out, the history of Disney princesses is long and not as obvious as it might seem.

How did it start?

The idea of Disney Princesses (Princess Line / Disney Princesses) was born in the late 90s. From the very beginning, the series is strongly associated with marketing goals, and specifically aimed at sales. Despite this commercial nature, princesses cannot be denied their charm. The inspiration for their creation was one of the Disney On Ice performances, to which the creator of the series subsequently went. He quickly noticed… the princesses standing in line at the checkout! It was believed that if girls love their favorite heroines from famous fairy tales so much, then it is worth creating a special line for them. Disney princesses officially hit the market in 1999 and have been one of the beloved and most recognizable symbols of the Walt Disney Animated Film Company ever since.

All Disney princesses

There are several myths surrounding Disney princesses. Everyone thinks that these are just all the main characters of fairy tales who have a royal pedigree. Nothing could be more wrong! Not every important figure has been honored to be included in this group. There are currently 12 official princesses:

  1. Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
  2. Cinderella (Cinderella)
  3. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
  4. Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
  5. Belle (Beauty and the Beast)
  6. Jasmine (Aladdin)
  7. Pocahontas (Pocahontas)
  8. Mulan (Mulan)
  9. Tiana (The Princess and the Frog)
  10. Rapunzel (Rapunzel)
  11. Merida (Brave Merida)
  12. Wayana (Wayana: Ocean Treasury)

There have been significant changes along the way. In the beginning, there were ten princesses. Among them was Tinker Bell from Peter Pan, who was moved to a sister series called Disney Fairies. The name was also taken from Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. However, there was no place for her in the other group. Over the years, and with the advent of new fairy tales, new heroines have appeared among Disney princesses.

What about other famous princesses?

It may seem strange that this noble group does not include many other characters who are undoubtedly princesses. In addition, they are among the favorite heroines of children. It turns out that one royal bloodline is not enough to get into the princess. Several criteria are taken into account, incl. the characters' origins, but also financial troubles and production success.

The first thing that comes to mind is the famous sisters from Frozen - Elsa and Anna. Why are they not among the Disney princesses? The film was so successful that it was considered a much better idea to have a separate series with Anna and Elsa than to include both of them in the Princess Line series.

What about many other heroines? Some may not be Disney princesses for financial reasons, such as if the film was not a commercial success and gadgets and toys featuring the characters did not sell well. This decided to exclude Esmeralda from the group of princesses. Another reason is animal origin, such as the lionesses in The Lion King or those who play secondary roles, like Ariel's sisters. In the case of The Little Mermaid, there is a nuance - she is the only Disney princess who was not a person from birth, but the fact that she later became one allowed her to join the official ranks of princesses.

Disney princesses in books

Disney princesses are not only the heroines of fairy tales on the screen. This is the effect of the marketing success of the entire series. On its wave, books, coloring books, stickers and paper puzzles are created. Children look forward to meeting their favorite characters in brand new bedtime stories. They can also practice so-called search receptivity, such as "Where are the princesses?". The task of the child is to find a specific character and objects related to him among the many details. There are also many coloring books and books with Princess Line stickers on the store shelves, which can captivate the baby for hours.
