Land Rover Defender Wins 2021 World's Best Automotive Design Award

The British SUV takes first place in the World Automotive Design of the Year category, beating out the Honda e and Mazda MX-30 in the World Automotive Design of the Year category.

The World Automotive Design of the Year category and awards are designed to highlight new vehicles with innovation and style that push the boundaries, and the Land Rover Defender took the crown in this category by defending its title. No other OEM (original equipment manufacturer) has won so many design awards in the 17-year history of the World Car Awards.

For this award, a design panel of seven respected global design experts were asked to first review each nominee and then come up with a short list of recommendations for a final jury vote.

The Land Rover Defender has been named "World's Best Car Design 2021" by 93 distinguished international journalists from 28 countries who are on the jury for the World Car Awards 2021. The votes were tallied by KPMG and this is the sixth win in the world. Design Car of the Year for Jaguar Land Rover.

The Land Rover Defender was also among the finalists in the Luxury Car of the Year category. Along with the Land Rover Defender, the 2021 World Automotive Design category was shortlisted for the Honda e and Mazda MX-30.

“I knew very well what a huge interest there would be in this car, because we have not seen a new one for so long, and everyone has their own opinion about what the new Defender should be like. I was well aware of this and desperately tried to protect the team from this, in other words, not to think about what was expected. We have a very clear design strategy that was to embrace the past in terms of recognizing its importance, but most importantly, to think about this car in the context of the future,” said Gerry McGovern. He further added, "Whether the new Defender ultimately wins recognition for being considered iconic, we'll have to wait and see."

Defender is built on the new carrier platform D7x. In addition, the SUV is offered in two body styles: 90 and 110. According to the specifications, it has a 10-inch PiviPro infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an electronic calling system, a 3D surround camera, a rear impact sensor and a traffic monitor. , ford detection and much more.

It features a host of electronic aids such as torque vectoring, cruise control, all-wheel drive, hill-start assist, traction control, cornering braking control, adaptive dynamics, two-speed transfer case and more. The Defender is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 292 hp. and 400 Nm of maximum torque paired with an automatic transmission.
