Lexus UX 2023 will be hybrid and get new technologies

Lexus' flashy new infotainment system is making its way into the automaker's lineup with the introduction of the 2023 Lexus UX. The brand has also confirmed that the crossover will no longer be offered with a gas engine in the United States.

Mid-cycle updates take place around the middle of a car's expected lifespan and are designed to bring older cars closer to parity with all the flashy new stuff in the lineup. This week it's the men's turn to massage.

UX refreshes with hybrid powertrain

Last week, Lexus announced an updated 2023 UX small crossover. In line with the automaker's plans to increase its focus on electrification, the UX will lose its petrol-only powertrain option. Beginning with the 2023 model year, all Lexus UX models sold in the US will be offered as gas-electric hybrids only. Two motor-generators combined with a 4-liter I2.0 petrol engine develop a net power of 181 hp. While the EPA has yet to announce numbers for the 2023 model, the 2022 Lexus UX hybrid is rated at 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway with all-wheel drive.

To further spice up the driving dynamics of the UX, Lexus has also worked to improve the vehicle's core components, with 20 new spot welds adding structural stability, and new Bridgestone Run-Flat tires designed to reduce noise and vibration. The electronic power steering and suspension also received upgrades.

The 2023 Lexus UX offers the F Sport Handling Package.

If buyers want to take things a step further, the new Lexus F Sport package comes to the rescue. The F Sport Handling Package adds adaptive dampers for more precise handling. If you want to skip the tougher stuff, the F Sport Design package removes the suspension upgrades but still adds sports seats, a sportier steering wheel, aluminum pedals and a unique dashboard.

Telematic system Lexus Interface

Perhaps the biggest update to the 2023 Lexus UX is its infotainment system. Lexus has added the Lexus Interface telematics system, which is a big step up from its aging, low-res predecessor. An 8-inch screen is standard, but up to 12.3 can be optional. Both screens support dual Bluetooth functionality in addition to the standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces.

Security Improvements

Lexus has also improved the UX safety package. The Lexus 2.0 security system has been replaced by the updated Plus 2.5 security system. The main change here is an enhanced automatic emergency braking system that can detect both pedestrians and cyclists. The update also adds the ability to automatically brake during unprotected left turns, as well as steering evasion assist, which can increase steering effort during evasive maneuvers to avoid collision.

The 2023 Lexus UX will arrive in dealerships this summer. Pricing has not yet been announced, but for context, the 2022 UX 250h AWD starts at $36,825 including dollars in destination charges.
