What are the benefits of optional motorcycle windshields?

They exist three main reasons replacement of the factory windshield in a motorcycle:

  • Limiting wind gusts and thus driver fatigue
  • Protection of the driver from insects, wind, rain and pollution from the street
  • Improving the appearance of a two-wheeler and giving it a personality

Installing a suitable windshield for motorcycle will reduce air resistance affecting the driver mainly at higher speeds, which will lead to reduced fatigue and increased driving comfort especially on long journeys. Dead insects on the visor and jacket can be annoying, especially on summer evenings, their huge number can unbalance even a dead koala. Here, too, a correspondingly higher windshield covering the driver's torso and helmet will come in handy. In addition, high quality motorcycle windshields, in addition to increased functionality, they can use their extraordinary design emphasize the appearance of the car and give it a tourist or sporty (depending on the type of motorcycle) look.

Choosing the right one

Windshields for motorcycles - how to choose the right one?So you already know it an additional windshield for a motorcycle is a great solution, and now let's move on to the more difficult part - how to choose the right one that best meets our expectations. Sometimes you may come across a few or even a dozen or so products that fit your car, which can make it a bit difficult to buy. As a rule, when choosing, several specific points should be considered.

Type: specialized or universal

The former are designed to fit only one specific motorcycle model. Mounting holes match the holes or mounts on the motorcycle, so that the installation is plug and play, which makes special panels they fit perfectly together and are extremely easy to assemble. They are made for the most popular motorcycle models.

Buying a generic windshield should be considered when we haven't found a windshield designed for our car or we have a bare motorcycle. Fastening universal glass usually these are two steel rods and two clamps. The windshield is attached to the handlebars, and the assembly itself may require a bit of creativity.

Type: touring, sports or custom / chopper

There are several types of optional windshields for motorcycles.

  • Tourist windshields - taller and wider than the factory ones, usually intended for touring motorcycles and provides very good protection against wind and weather factors. Which type you choose depends mostly on what kind of bike you have.
  • Sports/racing windshields (with overhang) - used for sports and racing motorcycles, have a special "hump" in the middle. These sport windshields provide wind protection only in the sport position.
  • Custom/Chopper Windshields - Designed for motorcycles of this type. They are characterized by additional fittings made of stainless steel or aluminum. Often produced "to order" in accordance with customer requirements.

Height: long or short

One of the most important elements that make our ride more enjoyable, rather than unpleasant, is its correct height. Too high (covering the entire field of view) will force you to look over it. A tall windshield is fine as long as it doesn't run in the rain or get dirty with insects.

However, if you install a glass that is too short, not only will you not get the wind protection you want, but you may also experience a jet effect that will force air over the edge of the glass and into your face.

A general rule of thumb for touring bikes and custom/chopper bikes is that the top edge of the windshield should be level with the rider's nose. This height will allow you to freely look beyond the fairing, while directing a stream of air over the rider's helmet.

Colour: clear or tinted

Windshields for motorcycles - how to choose the right one?We can find glasses in many colors, but most often they are colorless, slightly tinted (slightly smoky) or heavily tinted (highly smoky). Here we have to ask ourselves the main question, what do we really care about: the high functionality of the glass or the improvement of the visual qualities of the machine. In the first case, the best colorless glass that will work in any conditions. Both day and night visibility will be very good. If we do not plan long trips and move mainly during the day, then we can consider buying a tinted windshield, which will not only improve aerodynamics, but also positively affect the appearance of our two-wheeled vehicle.

Motorcycle windshield installation/replacement

In the case of dedicated windows, installation is usually quick, easy and shouldn't be a problem anyone with basic workshop skills. It also does not require instructions, because the purchased glass is installed in the same way as we previously disassembled the factory glass, using the same mounting holes and (most often) the same self-tapping screws. It can be a little more complicated (although not necessarily) in the case of installing universal glass. It is extremely important that it is attached to the appropriate parts of the motorcycle, and that the assembly is carried out as intended by the manufacturer. Only in this way will we ensure our safety and be sure that fairing at the most unexpected moment, it will not unscrew or simply come off. In this case, we recommend contacting a professional motorcycle workshop.
