Best Group 1 Used Car Insurance

Whether you're a young driver looking for your first car, or if you're just looking to cut down on your running costs, the good news is that there are plenty of great used cars out there that won't cost a fortune to insure.

We've compiled a list of the eight best used cars you can buy, with a Group 1 insurance rating - the most affordable you can get.

What is an insurance group number?

Insurance group numbers are part of the insurance rating system, which calculates how much your insurance premium will be worth. It is especially important for new drivers to know how insurance groups work in order to keep insurance costs down. Ratings range from 1 to 50, and generally speaking, the lower the number, the lower your premium.

1. Volkswagen Polo

Can you have a car that is inexpensive to insure but still looks like a premium product? You can do it with the Volkswagen Polo – it has been around for many years and has gained a reputation for being reliable and comfortable. The latest model looks stylish and its roomy interior is high quality with useful high-tech features, including digital dials and a touchscreen infotainment system.

Polos with the least powerful 1.0-litre engine get the low insurance rating you're looking for, making them economical to run, yet nimble enough for motorways.

2. Hyundai i10

If it is important for you to give a ride to your friends or family, pay attention to the Hyundai i10. It's tiny on the outside - small enough to be easy to drive around town with, and it has great views so it's easy to park. However, inside you have three rear seats (some cars this size only have two), and there's plenty of room for four adults to sit comfortably, or even five when pressed down.

There's more to the i10: it's also a pleasure to drive and comes with a sleek interior.

Most 1.0-litre versions come with a Group 1 insurance rating, and all i10s get a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty from new, so you can find a version with more protection still in place.

3. Skoda Fabia

A great option if you are looking for a lot of space on a budget. The Skoda Fabia is about the same size as the Ford Fiesta, but thanks to its smart design, you have more trunk space and rear seat legroom than most competitors.

Fabia is also very comfortable. The soft suspension makes it very smooth over bumps and confident on the motorway for a relaxed ride. If you do a lot of long distance travel, this is a great option. Choose one of the entry level versions and you'll get the low insurance costs you're looking for.

4. Nissan Mikra

The Nissan Micra is one of the most powerful cars on this list, so this is the one to go for if you want to combine low insurance costs with good performance. The Micra's flamboyant styling also sets it apart from most other small cars, as does its interior, which not only looks good, but also feels light and airy.

The best news of all is that every entry-level Micra has a Group 1 insurance rating, so you can choose from a range of versions and still get the cheapest insurance.

5. Ford Ka +

Where the Ford Ka+ excels is that it provides easy, hassle-free driving at a great price. This is a great used car that costs less than most of the competition and is very economical to run.

These low operating costs are covered by insurance. Opt for the 1.0-litre engine and you'll benefit from very low insurance premiums - all of which make this an ideal choice if you're intent on sticking to a budget.

6. Kia Rio

Diesel engines are very economical, but it's rare to find a diesel car with inexpensive insurance. However, Kia Rio is just that. Starting in 2015, the "1 Air" model enjoyed low insurance premiums in combination with a 1.1-liter diesel engine.

Low fuel consumption means it's one of the most affordable cars on this list. Like all Kia, the Rio has a good reputation for reliability, but there's even more peace of mind when you find it with the standard seven-year new car warranty.

7. Smart ForFour

If you want to drive something in style while paying pennies for insurance, look no further - the Smart ForFour could be the vehicle for you.

Look for the Pure insurance model at the lowest price. Regardless, it comes with a relatively powerful little engine that delivers more than enough performance for city driving. You also get the unique Smart design inside and out. The ForFour is small enough to fit in the tiniest parking spaces, but with four seats, it's a surprisingly practical little car.

8. Volkswagen Ap

Another vehicle that combines city-friendly dimensions with good interior space is the Volkswagen Up. The same goes for the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo, which are identical to the Up but with some minor design changes.

What's more, the high-quality materials used to trim the Up means you won't feel like you're penniless, even if you are. Good fuel economy, a comfortable ride and driving pleasure make the Up more attractive, and lower-spec versions have minimal insurance costs. Look for entry-level trims and the smallest 1.0-liter engine.
