In this article, we tried to compile a rating of winter studded tires and give some recommendations on which studded winter tires are the best for the 2020-2021 season. In preparing the material, we used the following test results: Vi Bilägare.
Michelin X-Ice North 4
Michelin X-Ice North 4 is a studded winter tire with directional tread designed for passenger cars. Below are the test results and comparison with other winter tires of the same type.
Dry braking
5th place in the rating of the braking distance on dry ground, 1,7 meters longer than the leader.
Dry stability
The best road holding on dry surfaces among competitors.
Wet braking
8th place along the length of the braking distance on a wet surface. 4,4 meters more than the leader.
Braking on snow from 80 km / h
8th result when braking on snow, the difference from the leader is 2 meters.
Snow handling
3rd place for handling on snowy surfaces.
Acceleration in the snow
3rd place when overclocking on a snowy surface, the loss to the leader is only 0,1 seconds.
Braking on snow from 50 km / h
The Michelin X-Ice North 4 ranks second for braking length on snow with 50 km / h after the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 (which is next in our ranking).
Acceleration on ice
The best result among competitors in overclocking on ice surfaces.
Fuel economy
8th place in rolling resistance, fuel consumption is 1% higher than the leader of the rating.
Noisiness
The noise level of this model of winter tires is on the 5th place.
According to the test results, the Michelin X-Ice North 4 studded tires rank 1st in terms of price / quality.
Main conclusions:
- Good dry performance.
- Relatively bad on wet roads: average braking distances and one of the lowest handling.
- Average braking distances on snow, good handling and traction.
- Best on Ice: Very short stopping distances, excellent handling and better traction.
- Average rolling resistance and noise level.
Nokian Hakkapelitta 9
According to the test results, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 takes the 2nd place.
Main conclusions:
- One of the longest braking distances on a dry road (but close to the leader), good handling and directional stability.
- Good wet performance.
- Average results on snow, but overall very close to the leader.
- One of the best indicators of braking distance on ice and traction, good handling.
- Very good rolling resistance.
- Average noise level.
Continental Ice Contact 3
Main conclusions:
- Best performance on ice: shortest braking distance, shortest acceleration and handling times.
- Excellent performance on snow: leading braking distances, handling and acceleration times.
- Poor wet performance: short braking distance, but average handling time.
- The same is true on dry roads: short braking distances, but one of the lowest subjective handling indicators.
- Average rolling resistance and average noise level among competitors.
Dunlop Grandtrek Ice 02
Main conclusions:
- Long braking distances on wet roads.
- Longest braking distance on dry roads.
- Average braking distance on ice and average acceleration time, low handling characteristics.
- Long braking distances on snow and minimal traction.
- Better rolling resistance.
- Quite noisy tires, especially during the running-in phase.
Gislaved North Frost 200
Compared to the previous model Nord Frost 100, the new model has modified tire edges to improve stability characteristics. Improvements have also been made to the V-shaped midsection, which should help drain more water to prevent aquaplaning.
In addition, the new, much lighter stud type allows up to 130 studs instead of 100, while limiting damage to the roadway. Gislaved has improved the Nord Frost 200 quite well to make this tire more efficient on ice.
Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Arctic
The strength of these tires is the studs. They provide excellent grip and control on the ice. Rubber also well removes water and snow porridge from the contact patch with the road. The spikes last quite a long time, while after running in the noise level is negligible. This rubber is more suitable for harsh northern conditions, where ice prevails on the road surface in winter.
