The best cars under £10k

Even if you are on a relatively small budget, there is a large selection of used cars available to suit a wide variety of needs. For less than £10,000 you have the choice of just about any type of car, from a small city car to a family SUV or something in between. Here is our top 10.

1. Ford Fiesta

If you want a small hatchback, you can't go wrong with the Ford Fiesta. This is because it does everything a car of this type should do, and it does it very well. It's stylish, comfortable and easy to park. It is also well-equipped, low maintenance and available with a wide range of engines and trim levels.

In the Fiesta, you have less interior space than some of the competition, but it's enough for four adults and there's enough grocery stores in the trunk for a week. What really sets the Fiesta apart is how enjoyable it is to drive. It's so fun - responsive and reassuring that few cars of this type can match.

2 Toyota Aygo

Small economical cars don't have to be boring, as Toyota Aygo proves. Its classy look stands out from the crowd, especially if you choose one of the many bold color combinations available.

It's just as stylish on the inside, with a minimalist design that makes it super easy to use. It's more practical than you might expect, it can accommodate four adults and there's enough room in the trunk for a few shopping bags.

You won't find many cars that cost less than the Aygo. It is very economical and inexpensive to insure your car even if you are driving for the first time. Most Aygos are well equipped with features such as smartphone connectivity and a rear view camera. Maintenance costs are also likely to be low because Toyota has a great reputation for reliability.

3. Fiat 500

With chic styling and sassy character, the Fiat 500 is one of the funniest cars you can buy for under £10,000. But that's not all, because this is a really good city car. It's nimble and easy to park, and thanks to the tall front seats, you'll find getting in and out of it repeatedly is easier than with some rivals.

All engines consume relatively little fuel, and the more powerful variants easily handle the challenge of motorway driving. The high-spec models have useful features like smartphone connectivity, and some, like the special edition Riva, even feel quite luxurious.

4. Suzuki Baleno

The Suzuki Baleno may only be the size of a Ford Fiesta, but it gives you just as much room and trunk as many larger family cars. There's plenty of room for four tall passengers to sit comfortably on a long journey, and a pair of prams can easily fit in the trunk. If you're looking for a family car that fits in a small parking space, this might be the perfect option.

The interior feels solid and packed with features, so the Baleno is great value for money. You'll find it's also a pleasure to drive with its powerful engines, making it feel confident in the city and easy on the motorways.

5. Hyundai i10

It may be a tiny city runabout, but the Hyundai i10 feels like a bigger car. That's because it has a high-quality interior and feels solid when cruising at highway speeds. This can be ideal if you want a small car to drive around the city during the week, but on weekends it can handle long trips.

There's more room than you might expect—there's enough room inside for four adults, and the boot can easily fit a few days of holiday luggage. Running costs are very low and most models have a lot of equipment - heated seats for cold winter mornings, anyone?

6. Vauxhall Astra

Vauxhall Astra is a car that will easily fit into your life. It's compact, but it has room for four long-legged passengers and a large trunk (especially in a station wagon), so it's the perfect family car. Plus, it's a pleasure to drive, no matter what road you're on.

You can choose from a huge range of engines and well-equipped trim levels, so there should be a model to suit your needs. And it's very economical: some diesel models can get you over 80 mpg, according to official averages. Whatever you need in a car, chances are Astra has it all.

7. Mini sunroof

If you're looking for a small car that's fun to drive and looks like a true premium product, look no further than Mini hatch. It looks like no other car is for sale, and there are so many different color combinations that hardly two are the same.

The interior is just as characterful, and while compact, it has room for four adults and a couple of luggage bags, and the five-door model (pictured) has a bit more of both (and easier access).

What makes the Mini really special is the way it rides. It's more fun than a small hatchback has a right to be, with lively performance and great handling. All versions are well-equipped, and you can find used Minis with all sorts of high-tech and luxury features that give it that big-car feel despite its diminutive size.

8. Ford Mondeo

A budget of £10,000 doesn't mean you have to stick with smaller cars because that budget will allow you to get a bigger Ford Mondeo. This is a great family car with plenty of room in the back seat for the kids and a large trunk that will easily fit everything a family needs, especially in the station wagon version. It's a pleasure to ride, feeling more nimble than its size would suggest, which helps with city driving. It also feels confident on motorways, making long trips comfortable and relaxing.

There are many trim levels to choose from, all generously equipped, and a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines. There's even a hybrid, although you might have to spend a little more than our £10,000 to get one.

9. Citroen C4 Cactus

If you like a car that's a little quirky and full of character, you should consider the Citroen C4 Cactus. Models sold from 2014 to 2018 look particularly distinctive with their rubber side panels (Citroen calls them "Air Bumps"), designed to absorb impact from car park doors and carts. The interior is just as bold, especially in cars with bright color schemes.

You can find roomier family cars, but there's plenty of space in the back seat of the C4 for small children and you can fit a stroller in the trunk. You'll find the Cactus feels comfortable and relaxing to drive, and the petrol and diesel engines provide excellent fuel economy.

10. Nissan Qashqai

Don't like low-slung hatchbacks and wagons? If you prefer a high-riding SUV, take a look at the popular Nissan Qashqai. It's a comfortable size - about the same length as a Ford Focus - but you get a higher off-road seating position and a better view of the road.

The high seats also make it easier to get in and out, especially if you need to lift the kids into child seats. There is room for adults in the back of the Qashqai and room in the trunk for family holiday luggage. It drives well and is value for money, so it's easy to see why the Qashqai is so popular.
