The best electric cars of 2022

Electric vehicles are more popular than ever thanks to lower running costs and zero emissions status. With a constant stream of new electric vehicles coming in in recent years, you have plenty of options whether you're looking for a city-friendly hatchback, a family car, or a large and luxurious SUV.

Where do you start with so many new models to choose from? Here, in no particular order, are our top 10 new electric vehicles.

1. Fiat 500 Electric

The Fiat 500 is a retro-styled homage to the chic city car of the 1950s and has long been a favorite on the roads of the UK. You can still buy this car, but this new all-electric model was launched in 2021. The Fiat 500 Electric has a similar design, but is slightly larger and has very modern features such as bright LED headlights, a state-of-the-art infotainment system and nearly 200 km of range on a single battery charge.

You can use the 500 Electric as a cute hatchback or an equally charming convertible with a fabric roof that folds back at the push of a button for open-air driving. There are also plenty of special edition models that give you unusual paint, wheel and upholstery combinations - few cars can be customized quite like the 500.

A host of advanced driver assistance features are available, including blind spot monitoring and automatic parking. Two battery options are available, one with a range of 115 miles and the other with 199 miles on a single charge.

2. Vauxhall Corsa-e

The all-electric Corsa-e has all the benefits of a standard Corsa hatchback, plus zero exhaust emissions and very low operating costs. In fact, depending on where and when you charge it, the electric model can give you the lowest running costs of any Corsa. It is by far the fastest car with an electric motor that delivers quick and smooth acceleration. Each version is well-equipped, including features like LED headlights, rear parking sensors and satellite navigation as standard, as well as Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity for your smartphone.

Every Corsa-e has the same electric motor and battery, though cars made since 2022 have been updated to offer a maximum range of 209 to 222 miles on a full charge. Charging the battery to 80% capacity (for a run of approximately 170 miles) takes just 30 minutes using a fast charger, or just over six hours using most home charging points.

3. Hyundai Kona Electric

It was one of the first all-electric compact SUVs and the Hyundai Kona Electric remains a very attractive option.

It doesn't hurt that the Kona is a very stylish car with a youthful, futuristic look, especially in some of the bolder paint colors available. It also has a range of batteries that matches many more expensive electric vehicles. There are two versions, one with a 39.2kWh battery that provides a maximum range of 189 miles, and one with a 64kWh battery that provides a range of up to 300 miles. Both cars are fast and fun to drive, and thanks to the high seating position and compact size, the Kona is easy to park. All of them are equipped with reversing sensors and a reversing camera.

4. Audi Q4 E-throne

The Q4 E-tron is Audi's most affordable electric SUV and could be a great choice if you're looking for a premium family car. You can choose from multiple trim levels, and with three different power options, the Q4 E-tron suits a variety of budgets and requirements. All models have great dynamics and fast acceleration, although the driving experience is more about comfort than excitement.

Interior quality is as good as in much more expensive cars. You'll get beautiful materials along with some of the latest automotive technology, including a great infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster rather than traditional dials. There is plenty of room for a family of four and their belongings. Battery range starts at about 205 miles on a single charge, while more expensive models can go almost 320 miles.

5. Tesla Model 3

Tesla has done more than any other brand to increase the appeal of electric vehicles, and the Model 3 - its most economical vehicle - gives you all the innovation you associate with a brand. Let's start with the official maximum battery range, which varies from 305 to 374 miles, depending on the model.

Few rivals can match the Model 3 in performance, and many sports cars will have a hard time keeping up. It is exceptionally fast, with some versions able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. You will enjoy driving at any speed, smooth ride and excellent balance on a winding road.

The interior itself is simple, with a large, user-friendly touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. Front and rear enough room for tall adults. The trunk is huge and there's extra storage space under the hood, making the Model 3 a very practical family sedan.

6. Mercedes-Benz EQA

Futuristic looks and technology inside go hand in hand with the high-quality interior of Mercedes-Benz's smallest electric SUV. The EQA may not be able to match some of the competition when it comes to battery range, but up to 264 miles between charges is not to be missed. And the EQA makes up for it with a first-class image and driving experience to match.

The EQA is in many ways similar to Mercedes' other SUV, the GLA, but under the hood is an all-electric engine. The interior is the same, which is a big plus because it's better than anything you'll find on most competitors. There's a choice of two trim levels, both packed with features as standard.

7. MG ZS EV

Forget everything you thought you knew about MG. Currently, the brand's appeal is centered on two things - value for money and power - and both come together in the excellent MG ZS.

On the outside, the ZS is a stylish compact SUV that, with a late 2021 update, looks sleeker and more modern than its petrol counterparts. The maximum range for the standard models is a very useful 198 miles, while the Long Range model has a range of 273 miles and can be charged to 80% capacity in just over an hour with a quick charger.

What really sets the ZS apart is what you get for your money. For less than many versions of small hatchback rivals like the Renault Zoe, you get a family SUV with plenty of room inside, including a large trunk. Standard equipment on SE models includes satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and adaptive cruise control. Trophy models cost a bit more and add features such as a panoramic sunroof, leather trim and the ability to power the driver's seat.

8. Hyundai Ioniq Electric

The Hyundai Ioniq is unusual in that it is available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or all-electric vehicle. All of them are great value for money, but the Ioniq Electric is the way to go if you want to drive zero emissions all the time. It may also cost you less than its hybrid equivalents.

The streamlined shape of the Ioniq helps it cut through the air efficiently, covering as many miles as possible on a single charge. The maximum official range of the battery is 193 miles, and charging from 10 to 80% takes about an hour using fast charging, or just over six hours using a home charger. It's a smooth, relaxing car, and standard equipment includes features to help make trips stress-free, such as powerful LED headlights, lane departure warning and rear parking sensors.

A large, easy-to-use touchscreen is at the heart of a simple yet stylish interior with enough room for four adults and enough room in the trunk for three large suitcases.

9. Vauxhall Mocha-e

With a 209-mile battery, stylish looks, and affordable price, the Mokka-e is worth checking out if you want to get into EV without breaking the bank. It fits a lot of the bill - it's comfortable, it has fast acceleration and a stylish interior, and it offers a lot of modern features for your money. While it may not be longer or wider than a small hatchback, the raised driving position gives you a good view of the road, and the rearview camera and parking sensors make parking and maneuvering a breeze. You'll also get a wide dual-screen infotainment system and driver's display for a futuristic look.

You don't have as much backseat space as some of the competition, so it might not be the perfect car for family use, but as a small electric SUV for singles or couples, it might just be the ticket.

10. Volkswagen ID.3

The Volkswagen Golf is one of the most popular cars in the UK, but don't be surprised if the ID.3 takes that crown in the future. Instead of producing an electric version of the last Golf, VW decided to create a new model and the ID.3 was the result. It's a Golf-sized all-electric family hatchback with a choice of trim levels and three battery options with a range of up to 336 miles on a single charge.

You'll find plenty of room inside, plenty of legroom and headroom in the back, a good sized trunk, all in a stylish minimalist interior design. There's a feature-packed infotainment system that looks great, even if some competitors have easier-to-use interfaces. Oh, and it also feels smooth and powerful to drive.
