If you are an archaeologist, you need a vehicle that will take you off the beaten track. After all, this is where you spend most of your time. And this means that you will need, ideally, an SUV or a truck. All-wheel drive is likely to be a necessity.

With these requirements in mind, we have evaluated a few used vehicles that we think are suitable for archaeologists and have identified five that we think are the best. These are Toyota Sequoia, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Nissan XTerra Off-Road, Dodge Ram 1500 and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

  • Toyota Sequoia: It's a very comfortable body-on-frame vehicle with a lockable self-locking differential and will get you where you need to go. Toyota's reputation for serious off-road capability is well deserved and very evident in the Sequoia.

  • Land Rover Range Rover Ewok: Land Rover has morphed somewhat in recent years from its reputation as a serious SUV into the luxury SUV niche, but it's done so without sacrificing any of the "go anywhere" capabilities it's known for. The Range Rover Evoque has no shortage of bells and whistles, but at its core, it's still a Land Rover.

  • Nissan XTerra off-road: It's an inexpensive SUV, but don't be fooled. It combines features you might expect from a more expensive model, such as a box ladder frame, a two-speed transfer case, and a locking rear differential. This is a good, sturdy SUV that will serve the archaeologist well.

  • Dodge Ram 1500: This is a beautiful truck with a powerful V8 engine. It features a fly-shift transfer case with 4WD lockout. It has a pulling capacity of 5 tons, so if you need to move a trailer to a site, you won't have a problem with it. It's also a surprisingly comfortable ride.

  • Jeep Wangler Rubicon: You can think of the Rubicon as the mountain goat among SUVs - it's not built for speed and it's not the prettiest SUV on the market, but it's rugged and reliable, and it can navigate even the roughest terrain. The Rubicon is equipped with skid plates, stone rails and a creep factor of 73.1.
