As an electrician, you have to lug around wiring, tools and equipment, and tons of supplies. You can't get by with a small used car, or even a big one. What you probably want is a good used cargo van.

  • Chevrolet Express: This full size van offers up to 284.4 cubic feet of cargo volume, 146.2 inches long and 53.4 inches high. The width between the wheel arches is 52.7 inches. The Express is available in various configurations, the most powerful of which is a V8 turbodiesel. It's not the most spacious van on the market, but we love the way it handles - it's so nimble you'd hardly believe you're riding in a cargo van.

  • Ford E-350 Ecomoline: The maximum load capacity is 309.4 cubic feet, with a length of 140.6 inches, a height of 51.9 inches and a width between the wheel arches of 51.1 inches. The most powerful engine available is the 6.8-liter V10. Again, it's not the most spacious van available, but it's a good, capable van with plenty of room.

  • Ford Transit: Here we get some serious cargo space with a maximum volume of 496 cubic feet, a length of 171.5 inches, a height of 81.4 inches and a space between the wheel arches of 54.8 inches. The most powerful engine available is the 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6. With 350 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, you won't mind if it wasn't available in a V8.

  • Nissan NV 2500/3500 HD: The maximum cargo volume in this capable wagon is 323.1 cubic feet, with a length of 120 inches, a height of 76.9 inches and a width between the wheel arches of 54.3 inches. The most powerful engine available is the 5.6-liter V8. Again, we get into a van, which has a slightly smaller payload capacity, but will suit most electricians.

  • Ram ProMaster: The ProMaster is spacious, with a maximum cargo volume of 529.7 cubic feet, 160 inches long, 85.5 inches high, and 55.9 inches of wheel arch space. The most powerful engine available is the 3-litre turbodiesel. It's not the fastest van on the market, and it's not the most attractive, but most electricians don't buy a van for looks. This is a solid, reliable car.

Of all the cargo vans we've reviewed, these five are the best for electricians.
