If you are a general contractor, you are probably not looking for a used car. You are most likely looking for a pickup because you need to haul equipment and supplies to various job sites. Most contractors will probably be looking for a full-size used pickup truck, but if you're more focused on smaller jobs, you might be able to get by with something smaller.

In the full-size category, we choose the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, and Dodge Ram 1500. For smaller trucks, we recommend the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier.

  • F: For decades, the F-150 has been at the top of the "best in class" list, and with good reason. Available with a V6 or V8 engine, standard rear wheel drive or 4x4, this is a powerful truck. It's also well-suited for "everyday driving" with a comfortable interior and plenty of options available.

  • Chevrolet Silverado: This is another reliable, solid vehicle that also provides enough comfort for those who spend a lot of time commuting from work to work. Chevy hasn't made many changes to the Silverado over the years, mostly because their customers have always been happy. Like the F-150, it is available with V6 or V8 engines, as well as all-wheel drive.

  • Dodge Ram 1500A: If you need to tow a trailer behind a truck, the Ram can handle 5 tons. The V8 engine provides all the power you need, and you'll appreciate the smooth ride and ergonomic seats. For most contractors, their truck is their office most of the time, and it's a very convenient mobile office.

  • Toyota TacomaA: This truck is ideal for light towing and transportation. If you don't buy the X-runner, you'll get a nice and smooth ride with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive - the X-runner isn't available with all-wheel drive. The Tacoma has a very comfortable interior.

  • Nissan Frontier: The Frontier is another great truck if you're looking for something pretty small. Like the Tacoma, it can handle light hauling and towing and is available in rear-wheel drive or 4x4. If you are a "small job" contractor, this might be just the thing for you.

If you need a little more space for your gear, you can always add a trailer.
