As a personal trainer, you either work out of the gym or go to your clients. In any case, you probably won't need to carry more gear than what will fit in your duffel bag, so when looking for a car, the first thing you look for is reliability, handling, and good fuel economy.

With these criteria in mind, we've identified five used cars that we think are perfect for personal trainers. These are Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Yaris.

  • Volkswagen Golf: The Golf performs very respectably when it comes to gas mileage: 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. It's also a very enjoyable car to drive, with excellent handling and an interior that's actually a lot more upscale than you'd expect from cars in this class.

  • Ford FocusA: The Focus is slightly better than the Golf in terms of gas mileage, with 26 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. In addition, the Focus is a very pleasant car to drive, with a sporty character and tastefully designed comfortable interior, which has been Ford's hallmark for the past few decades.

  • Honda Civic: This hybrid has what it takes in terms of fuel economy, delivering 44 mpg city and highway. It's also a fun car with great handling and a nice interior. The only downside is that the trunk is a bit small, but since you don't carry a lot of gear, this shouldn't be a big deal. You will definitely have enough space for your duffel bag and still be able to grab a bunch of groceries on your way home.

  • Toyota CorollaA: The Corolla is a nice, spacious car, and it handles gas well, with 27 mpg city and 34 highway. It provides a comfortable ride. Some drivers find the interior a little boring, but for our money, the Corolla is a solid deal in terms of reliability, fuel efficiency and handling.

  • Toyota Yaris: Some Yaris owners complain about the same complaints as Corolla owners - it seems to them that the interior could be more dynamic. What we love about the Yaris is that it's such a "big" little car. You will be amazed at the driver's legroom. Gasoline consumption is also great: 30 mpg city and 37 highway.

For the personal trainer who wants to travel economically in a reliable vehicle that is fun to drive, these five vehicles should be top of your list.
