The best used cars with big trunks

Whether you have a growing family or a hobby that requires a lot of equipment, a car with a large trunk can make life a little easier. Figuring out which cars have the most big trunks isn't easy, but we're here to help. Here are our top 10 used cars with large trunks, from budget hatchbacks to luxury SUVs.

1. Volvo XC90

Luggage compartment: 356 liters

If you're looking for a car that can provide a luxurious ride for up to seven people, as well as a large trunk, as well as the added safety of an all-wheel drive, then the Volvo XC90 might be right for you.

Even with all seven seats, it will still swallow 356 liters of luggage - more than the trunk in most small hatchbacks. With the third-row seats folded down, the 775-litre trunk is larger than any major station wagon. With all five rear seats folded down, 1,856 liters of space is available, making any large Ikea purchase easy to load.

Plug-in hybrid versions have slightly less trunk space to make way for electric motor batteries, but otherwise the XC90's cargo capacity is impeccable.

2. Renault Clio

Luggage compartment: 391 liters

For such a small car, it's incredible how Renault managed to make so much trunk space in the latest Clio, which went on sale in 2019. And that big trunk doesn't come at the expense of passenger space. There is enough space for adults in the front and rear seats, and the trunk volume is as much as 391 liters.

For context, that's more room than you'll find in the latest Volkswagen Golf, which is much larger on the outside. The rear seats fold down to increase the volume of the Clio to an impressive 1,069 liters.

While most Clios run on petrol, diesel versions are available and they lose some of that luggage space due to the AdBlue tank needed to reduce diesel emissions, which is stored under the floor.

3. Kia Pikanto

Luggage compartment: 255 liters

Small cars rely heavily on the ingenuity of their designers, who are trying to squeeze the maximum amount of interior space out of the smallest possible area occupied by the road. And Picanto does it with aplomb. The cabin can fit four adults (although it's better to leave the rear seats for shorter trips or short people) and still have room in the trunk for a weekly store.

You'll get more trunk space in the Kia Picanto than in smaller city cars like the Toyota Aygo or Skoda Citigo, and the Picanto's 255 liters isn't much less than in larger cars like the Ford Fiesta.

Fold down the rear seats and the trunk expands to more than 1,000 liters, which is quite an achievement for such a small car.

4. Jaguar XF

Luggage compartment: 540 liters

Sedans may not be as versatile as SUVs or minivans, but in terms of straight trunk space, they far outweigh their weight. The Jaguar XF is a perfect example. Its sleek body hides a trunk capable of holding up to 540 liters of luggage, more than the Audi A6 Avant and BMW 5 Series. In fact, this is only 10 liters less than the trunk of an Audi Q5 SUV.

You can also fold down the rear seats if you need to carry longer items like skis or a flat wardrobe.

5. Skoda Kodiak

Luggage compartment: 270 liters

If low running costs are important, but you want a seven-seat SUV with as much luggage space as possible, then the Skoda Kodiaq will fit the bill for many purposes.

Speaking of boxes, you will be able to fit them inside the Kodiaq. Fold the second and third row seats down and you have a cargo capacity of 2,065 liters. With all seven seats, you still get 270 liters of luggage space - the same amount you'll find in a small hatchback like the Ford Fiesta.

If you add six and seven seats, you get a five-seat car, and you get 720 liters of luggage space. This is about twice as much as in the Volkswagen Golf; enough for six large suitcases or a couple of very large dogs.

6. Hyundai i30

Luggage compartment: 395 liters

The Hyundai i30 is great value for money, lots of standard features and the long warranty you expect from this brand. It also gives you more trunk space than most other midsize hatchbacks.

Its 395-litre trunk is larger than a Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf. Fold down the seats and you have 1,301 liters of space.

The trade-off here is that some similarly sized cars will give you a bit more rear legroom than in the i30, but rear-seat passengers will still find the i30 perfectly comfortable.

7. Skoda Superb

Luggage compartment: 625 liters

You can't talk about big boots without mentioning the Skoda Superb. For a vehicle that takes up no more room on the road than any other large family car, it has a gigantic boot offering 625 liters of space for your family gear.

To put this into perspective, golf enthusiasts can fit around 9,800 golf balls into the space under the luggage rack. Fold down the seats and load things on the roof and you have 1,760 liters of luggage space.

If that's not enough, there's a station wagon version that has a boot capacity of 660 liters with the trunk lid removed and 1,950 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Add to all this a wide range of economical engines and good value for money, and the Skoda Superb is a convincing argument.

8. Peugeot 308 SW

Luggage compartment: 660 liters

Any Peugeot 308 offers impressive boot space, but the wagon - the 308 SW - really stands out here.

To make the boot of the SW as large as possible compared to the 308 hatchback, Peugeot increased the distance between the car's front and rear wheels by 11 cm, and then added another 22 cm behind the rear wheel. The result is a giant boot that arguably offers more room per pound than anything else.

With a volume of 660 liters, you can carry enough water to fill four bathtubs, in other words, enough for a week of holiday luggage for a family of four. If you fold down the seats and load onto the roof, there's 1,775 liters of space, all easily accessible thanks to the wide boot opening and the absence of a loading lip.

9. Citroen Berlingo

Luggage compartment: 1,050 liters

Available in a standard 'M' or huge 'XL' version, with five or seven seats, the Berlingo puts functional practicality ahead of luxury or driving pleasure.

When it comes to trunk capacity, the Berlingo is unbeatable. The small model can fit 775 liters behind the seats, while the XL offers 1,050 liters of luggage space. If you remove or fold down each seat in the XL, the volume will increase to 4,000 liters. That's more than a Ford Transit Courier van.

10. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon

Luggage compartment: 640 liters

Few cars are as travel-friendly as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but the station wagon adds a huge amount of luggage space to the list of virtues. In fact, it can provide 640 liters of space, which increases to 1,820 liters when you lower the rear seats.

You can also choose from a wide range of engines including petrol, diesel and hybrid options. Keep in mind, however, that the large battery required for hybrid models reduces trunk space by 200 liters.

Choose the non-hybrid version and you'll drive a prestigious luxury car with more luggage space than all but the largest SUVs and even more than some commercial vans.
