Best Used Convertibles

It may seem strange in a country where it rains more than it should, but the UK loves convertibles. In fact, sales figures show that the UK has long since bought more convertible caps than most of Europe.

If you've ever driven one, you can probably understand why. There is something intoxicating about wandering around the city on a fine day with only the sky above and, if you're lucky, the sun shining on your face. Folding the roof turns a boring journey into an adventure.

If you're tempted, there's a large selection of used convertibles available. Here's our guide to the top 10.

1. Mini Convertible

If you're looking for a stylish subcompact to get around town, there's little better than the Mini. Already a very attractive, characterful car that's a pleasure to drive, the Mini Convertible is even more fun when you get off the roof.

It has a fabric roof that folds electrically in 18 seconds and you can raise or lower it while cruising at speeds up to 20 mph. This is very handy if it suddenly rains.

You have a choice of petrol or diesel engines, as well as the sporty Cooper S and John Cooper Works models if you want even more fun. There isn't a lot of room in this car for rear seat passengers or stuff in the trunk, but there are much more expensive cars out there that won't make you smile as much as the Mini Convertible.

2. Audi A3 Convertible

If you want a little more refinement and more space in your convertible than the Mini offers, take a look at the Audi A3 Cabriolet. It's great for traveling in comfort and style, and the quality of its interior puts cars that cost twice as much to shame. Its convenient compact size means easy city driving and relaxation on long journeys. Even the trunk is big enough, with room for six carry-on suitcases.

You can choose from a wide range of well-equipped models, including several very economical diesels and a sporty, powerful S3 convertible. On all models, the fabric roof folds down in 18 seconds when you travel at speeds up to 31 km/h. The roof on performance models has thicker insulation, making the car even quieter when it's up.

3. BMW 2 Series Convertible

The BMW 2 Series Convertible is about the same size as the Audi A3 and has the same amount of space – it can seat four adults and the trunk is big enough to fit your luggage for a week-long vacation. You may find that you prefer the sportier looks and driving experience of a BMW over an Audi.

This sportiness is not achieved at the expense of everyday comfort. When the roof is down, "wind shaking" - when air blows in - is minimized, so you can better enjoy the weather and scenery. You can choose from several well-equipped trim levels and petrol and diesel engines that range from everyday to very powerful, so there's likely to be one to suit your needs.

4. BMW Z4

The BMW Z4 gives you the driving pleasure you expect from a two-seat sports car, but with the comfort and features of a BMW sedan. Driving is exciting and enjoyable, especially in the more powerful models. But you can also settle into a comfortable cruise when you just want to get home. In doing so, you can take advantage of many standard features, including satellite navigation on many models.

You get a fairly large trunk, so you won't need to pack particularly light items when you go on vacation. The latest version of the Z4 (pictured), sold since 2018, has a fabric roof that opens and closes in 10 seconds at the push of a button. Older versions sold since 2009 have a convertible hardtop that takes longer to lower and takes up about half the trunk when folded.

5. Mazda MX-5.

If you're looking for a fun, sporty two-seat convertible that won't break the bank, the Mazda MX-5 should be your first stop. This is a superb sports car modeled after the classic British convertibles of the 1960s. It's light, accelerates quickly, and you sit low with the wind blowing through your hair. It's fantastic fun.

There are two versions of the MX-5, the MX-5 Roadster with a convertible top that can be easily folded by hand, and the MX-5 RF with a hardtop. The hardtop has a section above the seats that folds down, but the rear window stays in place. So you can enjoy the outdoors while driving, but the car is quieter and safer than a soft top with a closed roof.

6. Abortion 124 Spider

While the Mazda MX-5 is great, it's not the fastest car of its kind. If you want a similar vibe but with more power and an extra level of sportiness, the Abarth 124 Spider might be for you.

The Abarth and Mazda share many components, including the interior and much of the bodywork, but the Abarth has different styling and more powerful engines. It's a huge driving pleasure, feeling very fast and exciting. There is also a lighter version of the 124 Spider sold by Fiat. Both have a manual folding roof mechanism that can be raised or lowered with one hand. It has a cozy stylish interior and several stylish color schemes.

7. Convertible Mercedes-Benz E-Class

If you want to experience top-down driving while sitting on the lap of luxury, look no further than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible, which can seat four adults. The trunk is one of the largest in a convertible, and the car is packed full of the latest high-tech gadgets.

Engines, petrol or diesel, are excellent. Diesels are a particularly good option if you do a lot of long-distance travel because their low fuel consumption means you can travel very long distances between fill-ups. This gives you more time to enjoy the luxurious interior. The fabric convertible roof can be raised and lowered in 20 seconds at speeds up to 31 km/h.

8. Porsche 718 Boxster

If you just want one of the best sports cars around, look no further than the Porsche 718 Boxster. Porsche has a well-deserved reputation for making cars that are fantastic to drive, and the Boxster is no exception. It's fast and fun, yet comfortable and quiet when you just want to get from point A to point B.

The Boxster has a beautiful, comfortable interior that is very well equipped. It's also surprisingly practical because it has not one, but two trunks - the engine is behind the seats, so there's room for luggage up front under the hood and behind the engine. All this means that this car can be bought with both head and heart.

9. BMW 4 Series Convertible

The BMW 4 Series Convertible sits in the middle. It's bigger and roomier than the Audi A3 and BMW 2 Series, and feels sportier to drive than the comfort-oriented Mercedes E-Class. There will be enough room for four adults to travel comfortably on a long-distance motorway, and the driver will enjoy winding back roads. If you get the diesel model, you won't use much fuel either.

The current convertible version of the 4 Series, sold since 2021, has a fabric roof. Older models (as shown in the photo) have a folding hardtop that creates a bit more headroom but takes up a lot of space when folded into a fairly spacious trunk.

10. Audi TT Roadster

The Audi TT Roadster is a great option if you like the style of a two-seat roadster but want more comfort than some four-seat convertibles. You can use it for carefree commutes during the week and then have fun in the countryside at the weekend. Its interior is just as comfortable and has the same high-tech features as Audi's sedans, as well as plenty of storage space.

You have a choice of engines in various capacities, including some diesels, which are great if you want to keep fuel costs to a minimum. There is also the sportier TT S and the very efficient TT RS. The roof folds and lowers electrically in just 10 seconds when you're cruising at speeds up to 31 mph.
