Best used hybrid cars

Whether you need a small hatchback, a family SUV or any other type of vehicle, there is always a hybrid for your needs. In addition to a gasoline or diesel engine, hybrid vehicles have a battery-powered electric motor that helps improve fuel economy and reduce carbon emissions.

Here we'll focus on "regular" hybrids that use the power of the engine and brakes to charge their electric motor's battery pack - you can't plug them into an outlet to recharge. You may have heard them referred to as "self-charging hybrids" or "full hybrids".

Regular hybrids aren't the only type of hybrid car you can buy, of course, there are also mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids. If you want to learn more about how each type of hybrid car works and which one is best for you, check out our guides:

You may also be wondering if you should take the plunge and get a clean electric car. To help you make your decision, our guide lists the pros and cons:

Should you buy an electric car?

If you opted for a regular hybrid, you have some great cars to choose from. Here, in no particular order, are our top 10 used hybrid cars.

1. Toyota Prius

If you asked most people to name a hybrid car, they would likely answer:Toyota Prius'. It has become synonymous with hybrid power, partly because it was one of the first hybrids on the market, and partly because it is now the best-selling vehicle of its kind.

The Prius is still a great choice if you want a practical and economical family car that looks original both inside and out. The latest version, on sale since 2016, is a huge improvement over older versions that were already quite good. It has enough space for four people (five in a pinch), a large trunk and a lot of equipment. The ride is also pleasant - easy, smooth, quiet and comfortable.

2. Kia Niro

Kia Niro shows you don't have to spend a lot to get a good hybrid SUV. It's about the same size as the Nissan Qashqai, making it big enough to fit the average family of four. On the road, it is comfortable and quiet, and most models are equipped with many features.

As with the Hyundai Ioniq, you can use your Niro as an all-electric car or as a plug-in hybrid, but the regular hybrid we're talking about here is the easiest to find and also the most affordable. A seven-year, 100,000-mile Niro warranty helps make your car ownership as comfortable as possible. As with all Kias, if you buy a used car, you can still have years of warranty.

3. Hyundai Ionic

If you haven't heard of Ionicthink of it as Hyundai's equivalent to the Toyota Prius because it's very similar in size and shape. While you can also get the Ioniq as a plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle, the regular hybrid is the best-selling of the three and the most affordable.

In fact, this is one of the best used hybrid cars you can buy. It offers a lot for your money, with a high level of equipment throughout the range. It has enough room for a family of four, and its impressive fuel economy means it will cost you very little. Hyundai's reliability record is good, but the five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty gives you extra peace of mind.

4 Toyota Corolla

If you're looking for a mid-size family car with a hybrid powertrain, the Corolla is one of the few options, but it's also one of the best. The Corolla range is also extraordinarily diverse - you can choose from a hatchback, wagon or sedan, 1.8- or 2.0-liter engines and several trim levels, so there's sure to be something to suit you.

Whichever you choose, you'll get a car that's easy to live with, feels durable, and offers great value for money. Driving can even be quite fun, especially on the 2.0-litre models. If you want a family car, a roomy station wagon is the best option, although the hatchback and sedan versions are certainly not without practicality.

Official Average Fuel Economy: 50-60 mpg

5. Lexus RH 450h

If you want a large luxury SUV but want to keep your environmental impact to a minimum, Lexus RX worth a look. It's really comfortable, quiet, and chock-full of high-tech gadgets, and while there are more practical vehicles of this type, it still has enough room for four adults and their weekend luggage.

It's a great vacation car because its smooth, relaxing ride means you'll still feel refreshed even at the end of a very long journey. If you need more space, you should opt for the RX 450h L, the longer version with seven seats and a larger trunk. Like any Lexus, the RX has an impressive reputation for reliability, ranking first in most reliability surveys in recent years.

6. Ford Mondeo

You may be familiar with the Ford Mondeo's reputation as a practical, family-friendly and fun-to-drive vehicle, but did you know it's also available as a hybrid? With the hybrid version, you still get the same high quality, huge interior space, comfortable ride and fun driving experience as other Mondeos, but with better fuel economy than even diesel models. And you can still choose between a sleek sedan body style or a practical station wagon, as well as upscale Titanium trim or luxurious Vignale trim.

7. Honda CR-V

If you want a large, practical hybrid SUV that has room for the family, the dog, and everything else, you may need Honda CR-V. The latest model (released in 2018) has just a huge trunk with a wide flat opening that makes it easy to load and unload heavy items (or pets). That's not all; there's plenty of room in the rear seats, as well as large, wide-opening rear doors that make it easy to install a child seat.

You also get a lot of standard features for your money, and the top-spec models have what you'd expect from a luxury car, including heated rear seats. You'll pay a little more for a CR-V than some family SUVs, but it's a very practical, well-equipped option that feels built to last.

8.Toyota C-HR

If you like a car that looks truly distinctive, that is unlike anything else on the road, the Toyota C-HR may be just what you need. But it's more than just looks. Driving is a pleasure thanks to the responsive steering and comfortable suspension. And it's especially good in the city, where its compact size and automatic transmission make it very easy to get around town.

Hybrid C-HR models are available with 1.8- or 2.0-litre engines: the 1.8-litre is a good all-rounder offering great fuel economy, while the 2.0-litre offers quick acceleration, making it the best choice for regular long trips. The rear seats and trunk aren't the most spacious you'll find in a vehicle of this type, but the C-HR is a great option for singles and couples.

9. Mercedes-Benz C300h

Unlike the other cars on our list, C300h has a diesel rather than a gasoline engine along with an electric battery. Diesel may have fallen out of favor in recent years, but it works very well with hybrid power. You get extra power from the electric motor for usefully fast acceleration and fuel economy, making it a particularly good option if you do a lot of long-distance travel: imagine driving over 800 miles between fill-ups.

You also get all the space, comfort, technology and quality you expect from any Mercedes C-Class, as well as a vehicle that looks elegant and sleek both inside and out.

Official Average Fuel Economy: 74-78 mpg

10. Honda Jazz

If you're looking for a small car that's easy to park yet surprisingly spacious and practical inside, the last Honda jazz worth a look. It's the same size as a Volkswagen Polo but gives you passenger and trunk space like a Volkswagen Golf. Inside, you'll also find a host of useful features, most impressive of which are the rear seats that fold down to form a tall, flat space behind the front seats, big enough for a folding bike or even your pet Lab.

The hybrid-powered Jazz is great if you do a lot of city driving because it has an automatic transmission as standard and it really takes the stress out of stop-and-go driving. Not only that, the battery gives you enough range to go a couple of miles on electric power alone, so you can make multiple trips without using a drop of fuel or creating any emissions.

Official Average Fuel Economy: 62 mpg (models sold 2020)
