Best Used Coupes

First things first: coupe is a term describing a sports car that is more practical than a pure sports car, but has a lower and more sloping roofline than an equivalent hatchback. Coupes often only have two side doors and four seats, but nowadays many brands also describe some of their four or five door models as coupes.

If you're looking for something family-friendly or a little more racy, a coupe might be right for you. Here, in no particular order, are our top 10 used coupes.

1.BMW 2 series coupe

The BMW 2 Series Coupé gives you a sporty driving experience that matches its appearance. It's very unusual among a similarly priced coupe in that it's rear-wheel drive, which provides excellent balance in corners. It is a pleasure to drive this car, and thanks to its compact size it is very easy to park.

Overall, the 2 Series is a pleasing blend of practicality and sportiness. You can choose from a wide range of engines, including powerful turbocharged petrol engines as well as diesels, which should give you over 60 mpg on average. The interior has a premium feel, decent seating for four, and a smart, easy-to-use infotainment system.

2. Audi A5

Audi A5 is one of the most popular coupes. Its appeal is clear: it's a great-looking car with a high-quality interior, offering fuel-efficient options at one end of the range and luxurious high-performance models at the other. You can also choose between two-door coupe and five-door Sportback models, so there is something for everyone.

Whichever version you choose, the A5 is a superb all-rounder, quiet and comfortable on board, but still a pleasure to drive. Some very powerful models are available, and as is the case with most Audis, you can also get the A5 with quattro all-wheel drive, which provides extra grip on slippery roads.

3. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and station wagon are premium executive cars that deliver exceptional comfort and performance. The E-Class Coupé gives you the same feeling of comfort and the same wide choice of engines in a more glamorous two-door body style.

Like any E-Class, the coupe will let you cover long distances in effortless luxury and style. The interior combines a high-tech infotainment system with elegant style. It's spacious enough for a family of four and their luggage for a week's vacation. On top of that, it looks like the cabin will last forever thanks to the quality of the materials used throughout.

4 Jaguar F-Type

Coupes aren't getting any sportier than the Jaguar F-Type. From how it looks, how it sounds and how it rides, this is a car that evokes the senses. Each version is fast, and the powerful ones offer the acceleration to match some much more expensive sports cars. A loud exhaust sound sets the tone for an exciting ride, and you can choose between rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive models.

There are only two seats in the cabin, so the whole cabin looks sporty and high-tech, but at the same time comfortable. Open the hatchback's trunk lid and there's plenty of room for a week-long vacation. Powerful petrol engines mean running costs are comparatively high, but in terms of pound-spent enjoyment, the F-Type is excellent value for money.

5. Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is one of those cars that balances between coupe and sports car. While it's a common sight in the US, the Mustang really stands out from the crowd in the UK thanks to its bulging bodywork and snarling petrol engines. It has the right drive, great handling, quick acceleration and steering that gives you a real sense of being connected to the road.

The Mustang is also comfortable, so it can be a good long-distance cruiser. However, it's not the most practical car on this list. While there's plenty of room in the front, there's really only enough room in the rear seats for younger kids.

The interior combines retro styling with state-of-the-art technology, and each version is well-equipped, with features such as power-adjustable front seats and leather trim. Running costs are high, especially if you opt for the V8 version, but the Mustang will give you a lot of fun for your money.

6. BMW 4 Series

The BMW 4 Series is a great all-rounder that evolved from a long line of coveted coupe models. The elegant two-door coupe appeared in 2013, and a year later, the even more practical five-door Gran Coupe appeared, competing with the Audi A5 Sportback. The Gran Coupe is ideal for families looking for something practical yet stylish, although there is enough space for four people in the coupe. Whichever version you choose, the interior is beautifully designed and the dashboard is easy to use.

You can choose from virtually the same range of engines found in the 3 Series saloon on which the 4 Series is based, so there's everything from economical diesels to extremely powerful petrol engines. Each version is a pleasure to drive, striking the perfect balance between pleasure and comfort, including all-wheel drive models that BMW calls xDrive.

7. Audi TT

Few coupes are as appealing to the heart and head as the Audi TT. It's a beautiful and sporty car that's fun to drive, but also economical and comfortable.

The latest version was introduced in 2014 but still looks modern inside and out. Many versions of Audi have a "Virtual Cockpit" that replaces the dials you normally see while driving with a customizable high-resolution digital display that lets you decide what you see in front of you. Interior quality is excellent, with plenty of room in the two front seats. Headroom and legroom in the rear seats are more limited, but you can fold them down to make the useful big boot even bigger.

You have a wide choice of engines, including economical petrol or diesel versions, as well as a sporty RS model. Every TT feels nimble and well balanced on the road, whether you choose a front-wheel or all-wheel drive model.

8. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Elegance is the word that comes to mind when you talk about the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. While rivals from Audi, BMW and Lexus are sportier, most versions of the C-Class Coupe are more focused on classic looks and long-distance comfort. The cabin has room for four people plus their luggage, and everything looks and feels like it was designed and built with the utmost care.

There is a wide range of engines available, offering you everything from economical (if you choose one of the diesel models) to fast (if you choose the high-performance AMG version). Every C-Class Coupé is quiet and comfortable, so whether you're heading to the supermarket or heading to the south of France, it's a pleasure to drive.

9. Volkswagen Scirocco

Take all the sensible and practical features of a Golf hatchback and combine them with the chic looks of a coupe and you have the Volkswagen Scirocco. Released in 2008, this striking model will give you all the fun of driving a hot hatch with a choice of diesel and petrol engines and even a darn fast performance R model.

Although it's lower than the Golf and only has three doors (two side doors and a hatchback trunk lid), the Scirocco is almost as practical, with a spacious four-seat interior and a decent boot. Getting in and out of the rear seats is a breeze thanks to the long side doors and front seats that recline and slide forward out of the way. The cost of ownership is very competitive thanks to economical engines and all versions are well equipped.

10. Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

Can an SUV be a coupe? Many car brands think so, using the term to describe versions of their standard SUVs with a lower roofline and more sloping shape. The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is one of the best cars in its class, offering you all the luxury, technology and comfort of the standard GLE, but with a sportier look and drive.

While not as roomy as a standard GLE, the coupe is still very practical, with room for four adults and a huge boot. You also get plenty of standard features, and whether you choose the petrol or diesel version, you'll get the high performance and confidence of all-wheel drive.
