The best used station wagons

Station wagons are a great choice if you want your next car to be a bit more spacious and versatile than your average hatchback or sedan.

But what is a wagon? Basically, it's a more practical version of the hatchback or sedan, with the same comfort and technology, but with a longer, taller, boxier shape at the rear.

Whether you're looking for something sporty, luxurious, economical or compact, there's a wagon for you. Here is our top 10 used station wagons.

1. BMW 3 Series Touring

If you're looking for something practical yet fun to drive, check out the BMW 3 Series Touring. "Touring" is the name BMW uses for its station wagons, and we chose the version that was sold from 2012 to 2019 because it's great value for money. There are plenty to choose from, including powerful petrol engines and very efficient diesels.

You get 495 liters of luggage space, more than enough for the whole family's holiday luggage, and a power tailgate comes as standard. You can even open the rear window independently of the trunk lid, which is great when you just want to lift a couple of shopping bags in or out. If you want the best combination of economy, style and performance, choose the BMW 320d M Sport.

2. Jaguar XF Sportbreak

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake gives you all the power of a luxury car with an extra dose of practicality for the whole family. It is a very pleasant car to drive with a smooth and unflappable feel and excellent long-distance comfort.

The boot capacity is 565 liters, which is enough for four large suitcases, and we love the convenient features that make it easy to load and store your belongings. These include a power trunk lid, floor anchor points and levers to quickly fold the rear seats.

3. Ford Focus Estate

If you're looking for a car that's practical, affordable, and fun to drive, look no further than the Ford Focus Estate. The latest model, released in 2018, has ample 608 liters of boot space for all your shopping or sports gear. That's about twice as much as the Focus hatchback, and more than some of the larger, more expensive station wagons.

Not only does the Focus Estate offer you plenty of space, but it also comes with technical features that can make your life a little easier. These include voice control and a heated windshield to help you save time defrosting your car on a frosty morning. You can choose from a wide range of versions, including sporty ST-Line models and Vignale versions that include many extra luxury features. There's even an Active model that has more ground clearance and SUV looks.

4. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon

If you're looking for the ultimate in practicality and luxury in your station wagon, it's hard to look beyond the Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon. Trunk capacity is a whopping 640 liters with all five seats, and with the rear seats folded down, it's 1,820 liters, just like a van. This could mean that you can make one trip to the top instead of two, or that you don't have to sacrifice any items you want to take with you on this Lake District vacation.

The interior of the E-Class Estate is as comfortable as it is spacious, and the sense of quality is enhanced by the high-tech and easy-to-use infotainment system. There are several models to choose from, with very efficient diesel versions at one end of the range and blazingly fast high-performance AMG models at the other.

5. Vauxhall Insignia sports tourer

Believe it or not, the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer is longer than even big executive cars like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo V90, making it one of the longest station wagons you can buy. It's also one of the most elegant, as befits its "Sports Tourer" name, and while it's not as roomy as some of its rivals, it has 560 liters more trunk space than the Ford Mondeo Estate. You'll also benefit from a wide and low trunk opening that makes it easy to load and unload luggage or a dog.

But where you'll find the Insignia Sports Tourer really shines is in value for money. It's surprisingly inexpensive for such a large vehicle, it's very well equipped and available with several powerful yet efficient engines.

6. Skoda Octavia station wagon

The Skoda Octavia Estate offers the practicality of a large executive wagon or midsize SUV at the price of a family hatchback. Its 610-litre trunk is perfect for family life, allowing you to stow your kids' bikes, strollers and shopping bags without worrying about whether they all fit.

The model we chose was on sale from 2013 to 2020 (the current model is larger but more expensive), so there are plenty of vehicles to choose from, including economical diesel versions, a high-performance vRS model, and a luxury model. Version of Laurin and Clement. Whichever version you choose, you'll enjoy a smooth and comfortable ride, as well as an incredibly practical, easy-to-use interior designed to withstand the demands of family life.

Skoda makes a range of station wagons, all of which are spacious and excellent value for money. We have compiled a guide for each Skoda station wagon model to help you decide which one is right for you.

7. Volvo B90

Think wagon and you probably think Volvo. The Swedish brand is known for its large station wagons, and the latest V90 uses all that know-how to create one of the most coveted vehicles on our list. From the outside, the V90 is sleek and stylish. Inside, it feels calm and comfortable, with a very Scandinavian vibe that makes you feel like you're in a posh Swedish furniture store.

The driving experience is serene and effortless, especially if you opt for one of the plug-in hybrid models that combine high performance with low emissions and an electric-only range that can be enough for your daily commute. As you'd expect, the V90 has plenty of legroom and a roomy 560-litre trunk. Even the entry-level model offers equipment that is optional on some competitors.

8. Audi A6 Avant

The Audi A6 Avant is an impressively stylish and prestigious station wagon that excels in just about everything. The current model, released in 2018, has an interior that gives you real pleasure every time you open the door, thanks to its superior quality and futuristic design.

Trunk volume is 565 liters, which is enough for most needs. Its wide opening and low floor make it easy to load and unload large items, while the handles allow the rear seats to be folded out of the trunk when you need to haul a very long load. While the latest model gets our vote, don't rule out a pre-2018 model - it's cheaper, but no less desirable and stylish.

9. Volkswagen Passat Estate

If you value a great all-rounder as well as plenty of features, you'll love the Volkswagen Passat Estate. It offers the quality and style of a premium wagon, but costs you the same as a more mainstream model. The 650-litre boot is huge, making the Passat Estate ideal for growing families and those who love loading things up at antique fairs.

Both inside and out, the Passat has a sleek, modern look and a quality feel that elevates it above most competitors. You can choose from a variety of trim levels, each giving you a host of standard features. The SE Business is particularly popular and strikes a great balance between economy and luxury, with front and rear parking sensors, DAB radio and satellite navigation as standard.

10. Skoda Superb Universal

Yes, it's another Skoda, but no list of the best station wagons would be complete without the Superb Estate. For starters, no other modern used station wagon has a larger trunk. That alone makes it worth seeing, but the great thing about the Superb Estate is that it doesn't look or feel like a huge station wagon. In fact, its character in appearance and driving is closer to a stylish high-end hatchback. This impression becomes even stronger when you look at the interior, which is characterized by exceptional comfort, high-quality materials and the latest infotainment system.

In terms of space, the Superb Estate offers a huge 660-litre boot, as well as ample head and legroom for you and your passengers. There are just as many as you'll find in some large luxury sedans or SUVs, and having a place for everyone to stretch out can make all the difference when you have a growing family on board.
