Best Utes Coming in 2022

The Ford Ranger is not only the only vehicle in the world designed and engineered in Australia, but also one of our most popular vehicles.

The past year may have been relatively quiet on the new model front, but that hasn't stopped their popularity from reaching new heights.

Expect this trend to continue in 2022 with a host of important changes that every potential buyer should be aware of before making an informed decision.

Note that the timing is subject to change due in part to semiconductor shortages and other factors impacting global production, but otherwise - without further ado - here are the best predictions for 2022.

Ford Ranger - Mid 2022

Best Utes Coming in 2022

The next generation Ford Ranger will go on sale from mid-2022 with more extensive changes and updates than previously thought.

With over half a century of development in Australia, key differences include new sheet metal, redesigned cab, larger cargo area, wider choice of diesel powertrains including a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit to replace the old 2.2-litre engine, a 2.0-litre carryover. twin-turbo to replace the old 3.2-liter five-cylinder engine and a large flagship 3.0-liter V6 - improved transmissions, redesigned platform with a longer wheelbase and wider tracks, larger wheels; a more advanced version of the all-wheel drive system, the presence of disc brakes on all four wheels and greater towing capabilities.

Along with significant advances in safety, cabin comfort, climate control efficiency, general refinement, multimedia technology, practicality and convenience, there is now a completely redesigned cargo area that can finally accommodate the standard Australian palette, so the new generation Ranger will be in top shape to take on nemesis Toyota HiLux for sales leadership. Let the battle begin.

In January 2021, one of Australia's most popular 2022 cars will complete a minor makeover with added safety and extra equipment, as well as additional classes designed to keep it at the sharp end of the segment.

Prices are rising as a result, although choice is expanding as Australia's new 1.9-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel sits at the bottom of the range to broaden the availability of the Thai-made D-Max for those who can't quite reach for the ongoing 3.0-litre versions.

In addition, there are more 4x2 and 4x4 models to choose from.

Like its Isuzu D-Max twin, the Mazda BT-50 is flying into 2022 with a slew of equipment and safety upgrades, as well as a slew of additional versions of both 4x2 and 4x4.

From January, the cheapest of the range also gets a 1.9-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, making the Thai-made car more affordable (and attractive) than before.

However, most classes continue with the larger 3.0 liter version. As with the Isuzu built alongside it, the BT-22 MY50's changes are said to be the result of customer feedback.

The W580X is the swansong of the first generation Volkswagen Amarok, offering off-road styling, engineering and equipment upgrades designed to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor, Nissan Navara Pro-4X and Toyota HiLux Rugged X from April 2022.

The changes were made by local tuning agency Walkinshaw and aim to make the frisky V6-powered W580X the most formidable Amarok ever offered in Australia.

That is, until the all-new second-generation ute based on the Ford Ranger gets a similar class, usurping Volkswagen from Argentina.
