Test drive Small or smaller - Toyota iQ and Aygo

Brothers and sisters of the same brand - Ford Ka and Fiesta, Opel Agila and Corsa, as well as Toyota iQ and Aygo will fight in family matches.

Are cheap and intelligently designed minivans full-fledged alternatives that could embitter the lives of classic small models? In the third last part of the series ams.bg will present you a comparison between Toyota Aygo and Toyota iQ.

Lead of one length

Toyota has already become the king of word games. First they released the Aygo model, whose English name sounds like I go. And then came iQ, which should probably be understood as IQ mounted on wheels. But is he really that clever?

At 2,99 meters long, it's very short indeed, but it can't be parked straight on like the Smart. The advantage over the Aygo in the parking lot leads to serious limitations in the interior space – the iQ can comfortably seat two adults, on very short distances three, but four cannot fit.

With the Aygo, things look different, as the model provides comfortable shelter for four people with a height of 180 centimeters and at the same time has a trunk of 139 liters. In iQ, if you use all the seats, there is nowhere to put even a briefcase with documents.

Equivalent duel

According to the "safety" criterion, however, the smaller model earns points because it is available in Germany with ESP as standard, and for the Aygo in the tested version, the City system costs an additional 445 euros. Even in the brakes section, the clear winner is the three-seater, while the Aygo brakes noticeably less.

There are almost no differences in terms of suspension comfort. The Aygo, which accelerates better in high gears and demonstrates significantly stronger traction at low revs, shakes harder when cornering. On the other hand, the surprisingly comfortable iQ does not move quite stably in a straight line. At the gas station, the kid presents another surprise in the form of a saltier gas bill - the reason for this is the larger front area of the body.

Preferably

In the Aygo, the driver can be positioned more comfortably than in the iQ, where the position is too high and the seat is not vertically adjustable. Regardless of whether you look from above, however, the overview in the mini car is worse - especially at the back, where wide side pillars and headrests obstruct your view. Therefore, parking with Aygo is actually easier.

At first glance, the interior of the iQ looks higher quality. However, the surfaces are too susceptible to scratches and dirt. So, however, the hard plastic of Aygo is frankly preferable, which with comparable equipment costs 780 euros cheaper in Germany.

In this match, the lead is in favor of AyQ, sorry - Aygo.

Conclusion

Three matches between a small and a mini car - in all three the winner is the bigger one. In the case of the Ford Fiesta and Opel Corsa, the small models clearly show that the world of complete cars starts with their class. And although larger, they are also economical.

Their tiny competitors from the same companies are distinguished not only by significantly poorer driving comfort, but also by the fact that the buyer is forced to pay extra for the protection of ESP. However, statistics show that a very small percentage of customers order ESP for this class, so companies are not on the right track.

You may also be annoyed by some individual safety weaknesses, such as the increasing braking distance of the Ka during repeated braking and the unpleasant driving behavior of the Agila at full load. The situation is a bit different with the Toyota pair. Here the customer has to pay more for a smaller and functionally weaker car. However, Aygo's victory is not so clear, because its ESP is also available for an additional fee.

Evaluation

1 Toyota Aygo

Cheaper, more economical, more everyday with four usable seats and a boot – compared to the iQ, the Aygo is the more versatile small car – provided you order it with ESP.

2. Toyota iQ

If you buy an iQ as a parking search device, then you have understood this car correctly. However, the cost of the little one is disappointingly high. In view of the also high price, the materials and workmanship had to be better.
