Little Scratch, Big Trouble

Little Scratch, Big Trouble A small scratch on the car body, a scratch or a small chip in the paint does not necessarily threaten to corrode the body, but paint the car.

Is it possible to eliminate such defects on your own, without an expensive visit to the painter?Little Scratch, Big Trouble

We were told at auto body shops and paint shops that this was not possible. The scratch can be polished and protected, but when it reaches the white base coat, this treatment will leave a mark. Polishing, depending on the size of the damage, can cost from a few dozen zlotys to more than 250 zlotys.

The trace after scratching the car will be completely eliminated only by varnishing the damaged element. However, these are really big expenses, especially in the case of metallic paint. As reported Little Scratch, Big Trouble to us in the body shop, the price for the service also depends on where the scratch is located. For example, in the case of a door, we will pay PLN 400-450 if the scratch is on the bottom, because it is enough to paint the surface for the protective strip. When the damage is higher, you need to varnish the entire door, which will cost twice as much. A scratch on the edge of the door may additionally require "shading" the adjacent part of the car to hide differences in paint shade, for which you will also have to pay.

It's too expensive, especially when the car is already old. Therefore, independent attempts are being made to cover up damage to the varnish coating. Laco-pastes, gels and regenerating waxes cost depending on the manufacturer and the size of the package, Little Scratch, Big Trouble about 10 to 25 zł.

It is more difficult to disguise a deeper scratch. The easiest way is to paint over it with a special chalk of a color that is identical (or more often similar) to the color of the body paint. However, experts do not recommend this method - the cover-up effect disappears after one or a maximum of several car washes.

It is more effective to use special varnishes sold in bottles with brushes. You can buy them for around PLN 30 at car shops where the choice is made easier. Little Scratch, Big Trouble descriptions telling which car the paint is for, and special templates. By applying them to the body, we can choose the right color. The factory color number, and often the touch-up code, is also commonly found on vehicle identification plates. It is also worth knowing that repair kits at similar prices can be purchased in stores at car dealerships, where using catalogs they will help you choose the color of the paint. The effect of painting with a brush depends on our skills and the size of the scratch. However, the scratch will always be at least slightly visible.
