How 5W40 stands for

5W40 is an SAE marking that allows the buyer to recognize a number of engine oil characteristics. The first digit is an indicator of the viscosity of the liquid at low temperatures, as evidenced by the letter W (from the English “Winter” - winter) in the marking. The last two digits indicate the viscosity at high temperatures. This indicator is calculated by subtracting the first from the last two digits, i.e. 40-5.
